On Monday 23rd January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.
PRIME BULLS – Yet another good entry of 78 prime bulls forward whereby quality was way down on the week, despite this trade was off the clock with a great demand seen throughout for all classes. Topping the sale overall was an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle weighing 913kgs and selling to £2122.73 purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Wilson, Newbank, Moffat sold 1059kg to £2070.35 purchased by Owain Llyr. An 869kg Charolais from Messrs Gatherer, Barnsford, Glasgow sold at £1890. Limousin’s sold to £1878 for a 677kg from Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Penrith. Top price per kilo of 277.5p was achieved 3 times, firstly for a 665kg Limousin from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm, Annan purchased by A & D Meats and Messrs Wilson, Low Farm sold another two at 677kg and 651kg.
Black and whites sold to £1500.25 for a 706kg Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith purchased by Jewitt Meats. Friesians sold to £1481.18 for 681kg from Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hill, Longtown and a top pence per kilo of 231.5p went to Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle for a 632kg Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – An outstanding show of 65 prime steers and heifers forward selling sharper on the week, trade saw seventeen selling over £1900 and eleven over £2000 to a day’s top of £2147.92 for a 797kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Gammie, Aberdeen and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport sold a 757kg to £2055 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 314.5p for a 518kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton to 310.5p for a 595kg and 625kg from Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries to 308.5 all purchased by Owain Llyr. Steers saw a day’s top of £2143.26 for a 756kg British Blue cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Limousins sold to £2139.29 for 746kgs from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold a 751kg to £2121.58 purchased by Messrs Metcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Top pence per kilo steer of 287.50 was paid to Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse for one of his 731kg Limousins.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a larger entry of 406 cast cows and stock bulls was forward proving numbers are not a problem for the largest cast cow centre in the UK. 170 beef cows sold to average 200.7ppk Mr Tom Wilson, Wood Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 824kg, 286.5p, £2360 bought by Owain Llyr. Sharplaw Farms sold the top priced British Blue cow for 820kg, 271.5p, £2226 also bought by Owain Llyr. Mr Mark Batty, Flimby Hall sold a Limousin cow for 883kg, 247.5p, £2185 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Johnston & Son, Orton Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 787kg, 259.5p, £2042 and 761kg, 251.1p, £1913 both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Leiper & Son, Bank Top’s run of cows topped at 760kg, 249.5p, £1896 to Owain Llyr.
236 dairy cast cows sold to average 158.6p up 6.4p on the week. Bluestone Farming’s run of non-UK bred Fleckvieh cows topped at 1003kg, 190.5p, £1910, 910kg, 193.5p, £1760 and 864kg, 196.5p, £1697 bought by Alan Jarvis (x2) and David Barker. Messrs Nixon, Ribton House sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 975kg, 171.5p, £1672 to Sean McGimpsey. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 23rd January 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw numbers rise on the week, this was met with trade seeing a steady increase on the week with most types being £5 - £8 a head dearer on the week. An overall average of 252p per kilo and £112.99 per head was achieved. Heavy hoggs were very good to sell with many surpassing £140 with ease. Topping at £158 for Dutch Texel’s from Messrs Armstrong, Town Head Farm, Walton. Dutch Texel’s also topped per kilo at 367.5p for a pen of 40kg lambs from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House.
