On Monday 30th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.

PRIME BULLS – Yet another large show of 90 prime bulls forward with a lot more quality on offer. The trade was seen to be sharper for the best flesh and slightly easier for the plainer cattle. Sixteen bulls sold to £1900 and over and twelve sold at £2000 and over to a day’s top of £2597.48 for an 885kg Limousin from Messrs Struthers, Greenbank Farm, Lanarkshire and purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm Dumfries sold 845kgs to £2522.33 and Messrs Sawrig, Sewborwens Farm, Penrith sold 1035kgs to £2468.48. Charolais sold to £2356.62 for 868kg and £2129.08 for 808kgs from Messrs Sawrig, Sewborwens, Penrith purchased by Field Fresh Trading and Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Beef Shorthorns sold to £1913.63 for a 729kg from Messrs Steel, Lesson Hall, Wigton purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton. Simmentals to £1877.31 for 818kgs from Messrs Graham, Orchard Farm, Hawick purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo overall was a Limousin cross bull selling to 312.5p for 639kgs from weekly vendors Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchase by Jewitt Meats. Black and white bulls sold to £1540.07 for a 686kg Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats and Holsteins to £1495.31 for 707kgs from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith and purchased by A & D Meats. Top pence per kilo of 229.5 went to 557kg Friesian from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith and purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – Another tremendous show of 72 prime steers and heifers forward resulting in yet another fantastic trade seen throughout with nineteen cattle selling over £1900 and four selling over the £2000 mark to a day’s overall top steer at £2039.87 for a 717kg British Blue cross from weekly vendors Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Limousins to £2030.13 for 745kg from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Wilson also sold a 737kg steer to £2008.37.  An Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £1729 for a760kg from Messrs Connell, Bank House, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo of 284.5 went to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake for their 717kg British Blue cross and Limousins to 276.50 for a 696kg from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.

An excellent offering of heifers forward seeing a day’s top of £2059.46 for returning vendors Messrs Craik, Waterside Farm, Castle Douglas selling their 753kg Limousin which was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.  A day’s top overall pence per kilo of 314.5p went to Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith for a 609kg Limousin and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, was closely following at 313.5p for 612kg and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle and finally British Blues to 306.5p for 625kg from Petteril Hill Farm, purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A smaller show of 305 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with all classes being very dear. 123 beef cows sold to average 206.4p up 5.7p on the week. Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall sold two outstanding cows for 839kg, 269.5p, £2261 for a Limousin cross and 851kg, 260.5p, £2216 for a British Blue cow purchased by Messrs Owain Llyr and Telinco Farms. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a Limousin cross cow for 865kg, 538.5p, £2134 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Leiper & Sons, Bank Top Farm’s run of cows topped at 847kg, 243.5p, £2062 for a Charolais and 824kg, 247.5p, £2039 for a Limousin cross both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Connell, Minsca Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 858kg, 225.5p, £1934 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Hiddleston, Park Farm’s run of cows topped at 770kg, 253.5p, £1951 to Les Fell.

182 cast dairy cows were sold to average 160.9p up 2.2p on the week. Messrs Robertson & Son, Wardpark sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 739kg, 246.5p, £1821 to Eric Hall. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House, sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 848kg, 187.5p, £1590 to Scotbeef. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 810kg, 192.5p, £1559 to Scotbeef. Messrs Little & Son Kirkbride House sold a Norwegian Red cow for 76kg, 203.5p, £1558 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Nixon, Ribton House sold a Holstein cross cow for 911kg, 168.5p, £1535 to Phillip Bowes. PRIME SHEEP: Another good show of 1771 prime hoggs forward this week with trade seen to slip slightly however well ahead of forecasts and other centres operating. The sale was led this week by Messrs Shepherd, Low House, Millom who sold 43kg Texel lambs at £152 (354pph) to Bowland Foods Ltd. Topping per kilo at 359p were 39kg Beltex lambs from Messrs Little, Hollands which sold to Andrew Dawson. Commercial types while less on the week continue to fare well in Borderway with marks to £120 for Heavies from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle and Blackies for 230pph from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs.
