Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3,743 sheep were forward consisting of 3,286 prime hoggs and 457 cast sheep.

Two separate vendors topped the sale at £178 firstly for a pair of 42kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Blandford, Hereford and also for a pen of three 42kg Dutch Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Keswick.

Topping at 435p/kg were a pair of 40kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £174 from Messrs Longstaff, Ascot House, Murton.

Messrs Blandford, Hereford also sold 53kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £174.

This home also sold a pen of four 37kg hoggs to make £158 (427p/kg), a pen of 42kg hoggs to make £178 (423.8p/kg), a pen of seven 37kg hoggs to make £154 (416.2p/kg), a pen of four 35kg hoggs making £144 (411.4p/kg), a pen of six 37kg hoggs at £150 (405.4p/kg), a pen of sixteen 38kg hoggs to make £153 (402.6p/kg) and a pen of eight 39kg hoggs to make £156 (400p/kg).

Other pens from this home sold to make 43kg at £168, 5x 44kg at £167, 5x 44kg at £164, 3x 42kg at £164, 9x 45kg at £161 and 6x 46kg at £160.

The outstanding consignment of 280 homebred hoggs from Messrs Blandford sold to average a whopping 41.3kg £150.43 (363.9p/kg).

Messrs Phillips, Fir Tree Farm, Harrogate sold a pair of 43kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £168, with 49kg hoggs making £160 also from this home.

Once again a fantastic SQQ average of 267.15p/kg and overall average of 256.01p/kg for 3286 hoggs was achieved which includes over 900 horned and Mule hoggs.

Blue Texel cross hoggs sold to £156 for 51kg hoggs from Jojo Andrews, York with this same home topping Texel cross hoggs at £150 for 61kg hoggs, and also topping Suffolk cross hoggs at £144.

1090 Beltex cross hoggs sold to average 136.28 (326p/kg)

Handy weighted pens of good meated Swaledale hoggs were good to sell with a pen of 34kg hoggs making £70 (205.9p/kg) from Messrs Rutter, Green Hill Farm, Barnard Castle.

Another pen of 35kg Swaledale hoggs sold to make £72 (205.7p/kg) from Messrs Rutherford, Bishop Auckland.

Swaledale hoggs also topped at £100 for a pen of 10 49kg hoggs from Messrs Clarke, Howgill Castle, Milburn.

Cast sheep topped at £172 for a pen of three Texel cross ewes from Messrs Price and Rogers, Hereford with other pens of ewes from this home making £164 and £150.

Mule ewes sold to £115 for a pen of 16 from Messrs Clarke, Stripes Farm, Waitby.

Swaledale ewes sold to £76 from Messrs Mallon, Pallet Crag Farm, Eggleston
