PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 84 prime bulls forward selling just as dear as last week. There was a lack of quality throughout the sale, despite this, the very best on the day were rewarded as Limousins sold to £2744.23 for 935kgs from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat. The same home sold a 902kg Limousin to £2611.29 purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers and Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton sold 852kgs to £2466.54. Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries to £2351.70 for 780kg to A & D Meats and another to £2124.65 for 719kg purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Top pence per kilo of 301.5p was achieved twice. Firstly by Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, and secondly by Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses.
Black and white bulls were seen to peak at £1795 for 833kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Montbeliarde’s sold to £1743.04 for 832kgs from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle and Fleckviehs to £1709.82 for a 708kg from Bluestone Farming, Nethermains, Duns. The same home also sold top pence per kilo at 243.5p for a 701kg Fleckvieh. PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller entry of 51 prime steers and heifers resulted in trade being dearer on the week once again with 19 cattle selling over £1900 and 13 cattle selling over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2345.66 for a 777kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Worsley Wholeside Butchers. Messrs Wigham, Cold Shields, Haltwhistle sold a 724kg Limousin to £2110.46 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais to £2146.10 for 757kgs from Messrs Gate, Brackendene, Cockermouth purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Hewitson, Lords Close, Maryport sold another to £2116.14 for a 721kg and British Blues to £2123.23 for 695kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake. This steer was also top pence per kilo at 305.5p, Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold a 686kg Limousin to 304.5p. A Friesian from Messrs Hall, Prior Hall, Wigton sold to a record £1800.25 for 758kgs and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Heifers sold to a top of £2083.51 for a 682kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse , Carlisle and 654kgs to £2037.21 from the same home and both purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Studholme sold 6 heifers to average £2002.40, £3.10pk, Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths sold a 678kg Limousin to £1983.15 purchased by A&D Meats, a 796kg Fleckvieh from Bluestone Farming, Duns sold to a record £2001.94 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of the day was a 608gk Limousin from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse achieving 317.5p.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 13th February 2023 Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw an increased entry on the week. All classes sold to a firmer enquiry with the average starting to see the green shoots of recovery, a welcome sight for vendors, an overall average of 251ppk, SQQ 265ppk or £115.41 (+£7) per head was seen. Peter McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton lead the day’s trading selling 42kg lambs to £162 per head purchased by Mr R Skelton. First time vendors Messrs Findlay, Easter Balgillo made the trip from Brechin to lead the standing per kilo selling to 400p for 40kg lambs (£160 per head) with this pen selling to Mr A Dawson.Heavy lambs sold to £156 from Messrs T & S Airey, New Grange, Dearham who’s run of 60 averaged £143.08. Suffolks topped at £145 for heavies from Messrs Dixon, Croft House, Penrith with mules to £125 for heavies from Messrs Browwell, Quarry House Head.

CAST EWES: All classes of ewes were a flying trade today yet there was a shortage of big strong continental ewes effecting the sale average. Topping at £131 for Leicesters from RH & EM Lord, The Bog, Slaggyford. Mules topped at £107 from Messrs Dixon, Whinney Hill. Swaledale ewes would be the dearest for some time topping at £87 for a pen of 5 from GR Morton, Church Farm.
