Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

DENMIRE TOP FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE SALE

The February Border & Lakeland sale was packed with quality heifers and cows several with valuable pedigrees that attracted a large crowd of buyers from across the north of England and Scotland.  Despite the recent reduction in milk prices demand for dairy stock remains strong as the dairy replacement cost continues to look attractive on the back of rising cull cow values.  The overall average settled at £2873 with the top price heifer and cow both selling for 3,800gns; with 19 animals selling for or more than £3000.

CIS sponsored the show and Mike Dixon from Beech House Farm judged the pre-sale classes.  The Overall Champion sold for the top price of the day at 3,800gns and was purchased by the judge.  Denmire Patiodoor Kay was consigned by the Dennison family from near Ulverston.  She was bred from ten generations of Excellent or Very Good going back to the famous Dunnerdale Rudolph Kay EX95.

Mr Dixon selected Espland Milo Angela as his Reserve Champion, she was consigned by Alan Cannon from near Appleby and sold for 3,600gns to the judge.  She was sired by Eclipse Milo and bred from successive generations of Excellent classified cows.  The Espland herd sold another nine heifers to average £2811.

The Stowbeck herd topped the heifer trade with the winning Senior Heifer who sold for 3,800gns to Mr M Ferguson from Seaview Farm near Perth.  Stowbeck Lighthouse Ester was sired by Westcoast Lighthouse and was bred from a VG87 dam with massive production with butterfat over 5% and protein up to 3.8%. Another three heifers from the Stowbeck herd sold to average £3167.

The Dennison family consigned a special group of seven heifers and cows to average £3135 including Denmire Lighthouse Marie who sold for 3,600gns to Mr M Ferguson from Seaview Farm near Perth and Denmire Alligator Ivy who sold for 3,500gns to the Hastwell family from near Kirkby Stephen.

Errolston Holstein from Gretna owned by the Davidson family consigned a quality group of cows and heifers and sold Errolston Raider Ricki for 3,600gns.  She was freshly calved in her second and was bred from ten generations of Excellent or Very Goods with the 2004 Royal Highland Champion, Stannock Formation Ricki being her grand dam.  This powerful framed cow was purchased by Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on the 1st March and features over 400 dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  This sale includes the Netherside Production Sale comprising 100 Pedigree Holstein cows and heifers in milk or dry.  This catalogue can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk or can be order from the Pedigree Office 01228 406230
