PRIME BULLS: The seventy bulls forward at the Borderway weekly sale have never ever been as dear with 20 selling over £1900, 17 selling over £2000 and two selling over £3000 to a day’s overall top of £3152.66 for a 1089kg Limousin bull from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold a 970kg Limousin to £3060.35 and sold three bulls to average 897kg 312.93 pph levelling at £2806.95 outwith the Limousins, a Luing achieved £2331.18 for 865 kgs from Todholes Partnership, Otterburn, Newcastle and purchased by A & D Meats. British Blue crosses to £2103.33 for 707kg from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Aberdeen Crosses to £1953 for an 814kg bull from Messrs Ferguson, Eastside Farm, Thornhill purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Top overall pence per kilo at 317.50 was paid to Messrs Norman, Little Orton for 857kgs purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith to 316.5ppk for 707kgs and purchased by Field Fresh, Conway. Fifteen bulls sold at 3.00 ppk or more throughout the sale.
Black and white bulls saw a days top of £1649.84 for a 656 kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor, this animal was also top ppk at 251.5p. Holsteins to 232.5p for a 545 kg from Messrs Mounsey, High Rigg, Carlisle.

PRIME CATTLE: Once again a shortage of numbers forward with only 66 presented to a very eager ringside of buyers. Seventeen of the cattlw sold over £1900 and fourteen sold at £2000 or more to a days overall top of £2437.93 for a 814kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Phillips, Mains of Minnydow, Castle Douglas purchased by steven Wilson, Butchers shop, Corby Hill. Charolais crosses to £2062.54 for 691kg from Messrs Gate, Brackendene purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle British Blue Crosses to £1848.02 for a 729kg from Messrs Barker, Little Broomhills Farm. Top price per kilo of 322.5p was achieved by Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie and purchased by Ballard Butchers, Castle Douglas, Castle Douglas sold next best at 321.5p for 586kg, purchased by John Penny & Son, Leeds and Messrs Watson, Sanders Close matched this price selling their 439kg heifers to Bowland Foods, Preston. Steers saw a dats top of £2350.74 for a 772kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle and purchased by Pioneer foods, Carlisle and purchased by Pioneer foods, Carlisle. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold 738kgs to £2282.45. Messrs Studholme, Nealehouses run of 3 steers sold to average 729kgs, 307.73pph and levelled out at £2244.37. British Blue crosses sold to £2078.61 for 718kgs from Colin Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Herefords from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill, Newcastle sold to £1881.95 for 760kg and was purchased again by Mr Eric Hall. Top Overall steer pence per kilo of 311.5p was for one of the aforementioned from Messrs Stufholme weighing in at 704kgs and purchased by John Penny, Leeds British Blue crosses peaked at 291.5p for 683kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake and purchased by Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great entry of 317 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with trade again sharper on the week with 75% of the sale being Dairy cast cows.
Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 980kg, 314.5p, £3082 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 888kg, 288.5p, £2561 & 818kg, 261.5p, £2139 to Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Priestly, Cracrop Farm sold a Limousin cow for 826kg, 277.5p, £2292 and a British Blue cross cow for 720kg, 281.5p, £2026 purchased by Alan Jarvis and Owain Llyr. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday, 20th February 2023 Harrison and Hetherington Ltd held their weekly sale of Prime sheep, with a much larger show of 2498 Prime hoggs forward with trade for all classes easing back slightly, much in line with the National trend.
Rod Scott, West Micklethwaite, Wigton sold lambs in Borderway for the first time in many years and he led the days trading at £160 and 400 ppk for some outstanding Beltex purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Hill bred sheep sold to £117 for Cheviots from Messrs Reid, Bengal, Lockerbie. An overall average of 240p, SQQ 250p or £106.50 per head still sees Borderway way ahead of other centres operating today.

CAST EWES: On Monday the 20th of February Harrison and Hetherington conducted its weekly sale of cast sheep & rams in Borderway market. A much larger show of cast sheep were forward with all classes much dearer on the week. Topping the sale was a single ewe from TP Wigham, Hargill House selling for £186. Mule ewes topped at £124 from J F Bowe & Son, Foulskyke. Charolais were bid to £162 from from NJ & JM Todhunter, Greyrigg. Suffolks topped at £136 from MW & AJ Blenkhorn, Raygarth. Hill ewes topped at £78 from GR Morton, Church Farm. A lot more ewes were presented & met a fantastic trade.
