Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3,374 sheep were forward consisting of 2,824 prime hoggs and 550 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £171 were a pen of five 40kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Phillips, Fir Tree Farm, Harrogate.

This same home topped at 443.2p/kg for a pen of three 37kg hoggs which made £164.

Messrs Phillips also sold a pen of four 42kg hoggs to make £170, a pair of 43kg sold for £168, and a pen of four 39kg making £165 (423.1p/kg) a pen of four 40kg £167 (417.5p/kg) a pen of 40kg making £165 (412.5p/kg) and a pen of eight 38kg hoggs making £154.50 (406.6p/kg) all from Messrs Phillips.

The consignment of 121 hoggs from Fir Tree Farm sold to average 38.9kg £150.72 (386.9p/kg)

Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth sold a pen of 10 39kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £170 (435.9p/kg) with another pen of six 42kg hoggs making £167 (397.6p/kg) and a pen of nine 39kg hoggs making £157 (402.6p/kg).

The run of 62 Beltex cross hoggs from Highscale Farm sold to average 40.5kg £157.58 (389p/kg)

Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of five 41kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £164 (400p/kg) who also sold 52kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £160, this same home sold 52kg Texel cross hoggs to make £150.

An SQQ average of 265.3p/kg and an overall average of 250p/kg for 2824 hoggs was achieved which includes over 900 horned and Mule hoggs.

Blackfaced hoggs topped at £110 for two pens of 32 and 25 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown.

This same home also sold a pen of 25 46kg (Blackfaced hoggs to make £107.50 (233.7p/kg) a pen of 28 47kg making £108 and a pen of 28 48 Blackfaced hoggs making £109.

Glen Ogle Farms, Perthshire sold a pen of 32 29kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £73 (251.7p/kg).

Swaledale tup hoggs topped at £109 for a pen of 10 from Messrs Fawcett, Argill House, South Stainmore.

Swaledale hoggs also topped at 214.9p/kg for a pen of 23 47kg hoggs which made £101 from Elliott Bros, Harbour Flatt, Murton.

Mule hoggs topped at £108.50 for a pen of 18 49kg hoggs from Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon.

Two pens of 28 46kg Mules sold to make £102.50 (222.8p/kg) also from this home.

29 pens and 133 hoggs sold between £150-£171

61 pens and 318 hoggs sold between £140-£171

43 pens and 260 hoggs sold between 350-443p/kg.

Cast sheep topped at £190 for a pair of Bluefaced Leicester ewes from Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon.

Swaledale ewes topped at £90 for a pen from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Great Asby.

All classes of ewes were a strong trade once again and many more numbers can be sold to advantage on a weekly basis here at Kirkby Stephen!
