Harrison & Hetherington held their two day Special March Show and Sale of Continental Store Cattle. This has always been a much-anticipated sale but the last couple of years has seen it reach new levels. Vendors from the South Coast of England, Wales, Yorkshire and up to the Highlands of Scotland joined local vendors who now view this as the number one destination for their cattle with new vendors again making the switch.
Friday night saw a show of unrivalled quality with 100 calves presented for Judge Mr James Nisbet to cast his expert eye over. Hospitality was kindly provided by local Master Butcher, Steven Wilson, Corby Hill with A W Jenkinson Ltd and Tynedale Farm Supplies providing the Sponsorship, we thank all parties for their generous support.
Winning the Championship at this event is no mean feat but to do it two years in a row is truly special, achieving this was John and Mandy Smith Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle with their Limousin heifer, she sold on Saturday morning for £6000 to the Judge.
Messrs Smith Jackson also claimed the bullock Champion and Reserve, the Champion being a Blue and the Reserve a Limousin which sold for £5000 and £3800 respectively to Messrs Sedgewick, Durham
Stealing the Show was the Reserve Champion heifer a British Blue shown by Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait, Perthshire who brought an exceptional run of 52 calves to the event. This outstanding heifer set a new centre record of £15,000 selling to Lee Hopwood, Rochdale.
The sale on Saturday leaves the writer of this report dumbfounded, with words failing me in describing what unfolded ringside, so here are the facts. 5 cattle sold over £6000, 14 over £4000, 45 over £2000 and 71 over £1800. The Prize winning heifers averaged a mind blowing £4313 with bullocks at £2168.57. The overall sale average was £1577.47 which is up £300 on the year with heifers rising £370.31 and bullocks £254.19.
Unshown commercial cattle sold to a massive ring side of customers, topping at £5000 for a cracking Limousin heifer by Trueman Idol consigned by Messrs Priestley, Cracrop with commercial bullocks selling to £2050 from Messrs Robertston, Logierait, £2040 from the same home and also at £2040 Messrs Scott, Gateside, Linlithgow.
