Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 4,480 sheep were forward consisting of 3,926 prime hoggs and 554 cast sheep.

 

Topping the sale at £177.50 were a pen of eleven 41kg Beltex cross hoggs from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

 

Topping at 439.2p/kg were a pen of twelve 37kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £162.50 from R Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport.

 

Jojo Andrews also sold a further five pens of hoggs to exceed £170  with  pens of five 44kg hoggs making £176, and £173, a pen of six 43kg making £173, a pen of ten 41kg making £170 and a pen of twelve 42kg hoggs making £170, all from Boscar Flats, with this home also selling a pen of twelve 40kg hoggs to make £169 (422.5p/kg) another pen of twelve 41kg hoggs at £167 and a pen of fifteen 42kg making £166.

The superbly finished consignment of 164 hoggs from Boscar Flats averaged a whopping 42.4kg £160.94 (379.33p/kg).

 

Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm sold a pen of eleven 43kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £170.50, with a pen of fourteen 43kg hoggs making a pen of 48kg making £166 and a pen of 43kg selling for £166 all from this home.

 

Well bred heavy hoggs were in demand once again with 54kg hoggs from Messrs Birkbeck, Decklyn, Soulby selling for £170.

Pens of 53kg, and 52kg hoggs sold for £160, and 54kg at £157 from Jojo Andrews.

 

Messrs Harrison, Tailbert sold 48kg hoggs to make £167.

 

Charollais hoggs topped at £133 for a pen of 57kg hoggs from R Skelton, Maryport.

 

Handy and medium weighted export hoggs were in extreme demand and a flying trade with many pens of 38-44kg commercial bred hoggs regularly making 260-270p/kg.

 

 

Suffolk hoggs sold to 264.1p/kg from Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby.

 

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown sold Suffolk cross hoggs to top at £131 with a pen of seventeen 51kg Suffolk cross hoggs making £120 also from this home.

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £120 for a pen of twenty 53kg hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, with this home selling a pen of twenty eight 44kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £109.50 (248.9p/kg) and a pen twenty eight 45kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £110.50 (245.6p/kg) and a pen of thirty four 48kg Blackfaced hoggs making £115.50 (240.6p/kg)

The consignment of 324 Blackfaced hoggs from Smalmstown Farm sold to average 48kg £115 (239.5p/kg)

Mule hoggs sold to £124.50 for a pen from Messrs Patchett, West Summerside, Ripon.

Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick sold a pen of 20 Mules to make £124.

Messrs Patchett, Ripon sold a pen of twenty 47kg Mules to make £109.50 (233p/kg) with another pen of twenty 48kgkg Mules making £111 (231.3p/kg) also from this home.

The run of 317 Mule hoggs from West Summersides sold to average 48.8kg £110 (225.4p/kg)

Swaledale hoggs sold to £112 for a pen from Messrs Hutchinson, Hebblethwaite Hall, Sedbergh.

Once again Kirkby Stephen led the way with an SQQ average of 274.26p/kg and an overall average of 252.8p/kg for 3926 hoggs which includes over 1400 horned and Mule hoggs.

620 Beltex cross hoggs sold to average £145 & 345p/kg.

554 Blackfaced hoggs sold to average £106.73 & 235p/kg.

24 pens and 178 hoggs sold between £160-£177.50

60 pens and 374 hoggs sold between £140-£177.50

88 hoggs sold between 400-439p/kg

40 pens and 309 hoggs sold between 350-439p/kg.

Messrs Patchett, Ripon sold 40kg Swaledale hoggs to make £96 (240p/kg)

Messrs Stirke, York sold a pen of eighteen 47kg Swaledale hoggs to make £105.50 (224.5p/kg)

Messrs Rutherford, Weardale sold a pen of thirty three 38kg Swaledale hoggs to make £85 (223.7p/kg).

Cast sheep topped at £200 on three different occasions all for Texel ewes from Messrs Hebson, Chapel Farm, Carlisle.

Mule ewes topped at £127.50 for a pen of five from Messrs Chappelhow, Friendship Farm.

Swaledale ewes topped at £86 from Messrs Brogden, Helbeck Farm, Brough.

Texel cast rams sold to £152 from Messrs Wood, Woodside, Barnard Castle.
