On Monday 20th March at Harrison & Hetherington conducted there weekly sale of Primestock which included the Annual spring Show & Sales on behalf of the Border Blue Club and the North West Limousins club.

PRIME CATTLE: 62 prime steers and heifers sold to an outstanding trade at Borderway weekly sale. Incorporated in today’s sale was the easter primestock show on behalf of the Border British Blue Club and the North West Limousin Breeders Club and was Kindly sponsored by Stampers Haulage, Wigton. The pre sale show was ably judged by Mr Harry Emslie, Aberdeen. Topping the sale overall was the Third prize Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with their 761kgs to £2378.13 and was purchased by Mr Kitson, Yorkshire other Limousin crosses sold to £2333.59 for 742kgs for the second prize from Messrs Studholme, Nealehouse and third best price of £2309.64 went to Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill for an unshown steer and purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blues sold to £2256.48 for the 689kg first prize and Champion form Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and purchased by John Penny, Leeds this was also top price per kilo of 327.5p. there was 16 bullocks sold for over £2000 per head. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton to 319.5p for a 626kg Limousin cross and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Heifers were forward in outstanding quality and averaged 314.9ppk throughout and £1919.19 per head. Topping this section was the presale Champion Limousin from James Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont which weighed 662kgs, 349.5ppk equating to £2313.69 and was purchased by the Judge Mr Harry Emslie, who purchased the top two priced heifers. Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton sold 682kgs to £2284.70. Messrs Crichton sold 663kgs to £2250.89 and the reserve champion Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealehouse sold to £2229.70 for 620kgs and purchased by Mr Kitson, Yorkshire. Top price per kilo of 367.50 was attained by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton with a 504kg Limousin cross and purchased by Owain Llyr Ruthin.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 75 prime bulls forward selling to a remarkable trade once again, quality was lacking but the best that arrived received a trade they deserved top overall was a 685kg Limousin who was the first prized bull from Messrs Campbell Strawfrank, Lanark achieving £2174.58and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. The next best price of £2174.45 went to a 767kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle and purchased by A & D Meats. British Blues to £2066.53 for 655kgs first prize bull from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top price per kilo of 323.5 went to a 629kg Limousin from Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank and this one was purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer, Wormanby Farms, Burgh by Sands, Carlisle sold the top priced Holstein/ Friesian to £1803.75 for 962kgs and purchased by Me Alan Jarvis. Friesians to £1601.15 for 663kgs from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats and top pence per kilo of £246.5 went to a 549kg Friesian form Messrs Preston, Wed Holme Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – An increased number of 293 Cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with 97 of the cast cows being Beef bred.
Mr Neil Forrester, Down by Rigg sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 818kg, 333.5p, £2728 and 858kg 299.5p £2569 both purchased by David Holmes. Messrs McGarva, Nether Abington Farm, sold a Blue cow for 986kg, 269.5p £2657 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dixon & Chappelhow, Westfield House Farm, sold a Blue x cow for 884kg, 299.5p £2647 to David Holmes. Messrs Watret, Northfield Park sold a Blue cow for 855kg 267.5p £2287 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow for 851kg, 267.5p £2276 to Charles Kirkpatrick. PRIME SHEEP: A much larger show of hoggs were forward this week with many faces returning to the Borderway prime sheep ring with several new Vendors joining them too with all being treated to a fantastic rise in trade which left all vendors ecstatic. An overall average of 267ppk SQQ 280pppk or £122.80 was recorded.
Messrs McKie, Finniness Farm, Castle Douglas made his first trip to Borderway a memorable one, selling to a joint top price of £170 for Beltex hoggs which also lead the PPK league table at 395.3ppk selling to Mr Andrew Dawson with the consignment averaging £150.80 per head. Matching this price was Bruce Findlay, Easter Balgillo, Brechin again with Beltex hoggs at £170 purchased by Mr R Skelton.
A large consignment of Hill hoggs sold exceptionally well, to a top of £135 for a Cheviots from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton or to 284.1ppk for Cheviots from Caldcoates Beef, Glasgow, another new face at Borderway. Blackies sold to £125 from Messrs Harrison, Dundraw, Wigton and to 278ppk from Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown. Mules to £126 from Messrs Bendle, the Nook, Scaleby and to 257.8pp from Adam Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton.
Straight, handy weight, first cross lambs were a flying trade, with plenty 41-43kg lambs selling to 295-305ppk.

CAST EWES & RAMS: The trade today hade to be seen to believed, as more buyers were in attendance, setting the trade alight. Topping at £185 for a Texel cross from Messrs Reid, Bengall, Lockerbie.
Jacob ewes sold to £127 for a pen of 3 from DA Holliday, Rashfield. Swaledales sold to £77twice for a pen of 5 from K & SM Johnson, Wolfhills and again for a pair from R Smith & Co, Roachburn.
