PRIME CATTLE: Numbers fell way short of buyers demand with trade seeing steers to £2367.75 for 770kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake.  £2338.94 for 739kgs from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, £2306.48 for 765kgs from first time vendors Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries, £2342.66 for 777kg from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and Blonde crosses to £2232.72 for 743kg from Messrs Robson, Merryshield, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle sold the two top pence per kilo steers at 316.5p and 312.5p both purchased by Pioneer Foods,  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake to 309.5p purchased by Morgan Helliwell and 308.5p from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport purchased by Eric Hall.

Heifers peaked at £1818.90 for 564kg Limousin cross from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna purchased by John Penny, Leeds.  Charolais crosses to £1812.02 for 603kgs also from this same good home and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle and to take the clean sweep of top pence per kilo at 322.5 was Messrs Rome with another Limousin cross purchased by John Penny, Leeds.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller show of 51 Prime bulls forward selling to a flyer of a trade once again due to a huge shortage on the day.  Many more bulls are required to fulfil weekly demand.

First time vendors Messrs Cochrane, Barlennan, Newton Stewart topped the sale with a 772kg Limousin cross achieving £2412.50 to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan sold top Charolais to £2136.70 for 733kg to A & D Meats,  British Blue crosses to £1815.78 for 636kgs from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top overall pence per kilo of 312.5p went to the aforementioned Limousin cross from Messrs Cochrane,

Black and white bulls sold extremely well and saw a days top of £1542.05 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie for 669kg to Bowland Foods.  Friesians to £1519.82 for 671kgs from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith who also sold the top pence per kilo of 233.5p for 630kg Friesian both purchased by Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a massive show of 300 Cast cows and Stock bulls forward with all classes being very good to sell.

Messrs Rawlinson, Quarry Bank Farm sold the top priced Blue cow for 863kg, 279.5p £2412 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Gass, Nunsceugh run of cows topped at 841kg 254.5p £2140 again to Charles Kirkpatrick

D A Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm, run of cows topped at 730kg 280.5p £2047 and 712kg 279.5p £1990 both purchased by Owain Llyr.  Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold a South Devon for 901kg 215.5p £1941 to Alan Jarvis

All classes of Dairy cast cows were a flying trade which included 23 Jerseys.  Castlesteads Farms run of Holstein x cows topped the sale at 960kg 206.5p £1982 and 821kg 201.5 £1654 bought by Jewitts and Les Fell.  Messrs Horsley, Woodhouse sold the top price Holstein heifer for 828kg 224.5p £1858 to Jewitts.  Messrs Nixon, Ribton House run of Holstein x cows topped at 909kg, 194.5p £1768 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 845kg 204.5p £1728 to Scotbeef.  D A Harrison sold a Fleckvieh x cow for 708kg 227.5p £1610 to Les Fell.  Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein x heifer for 216.5p to Les Fell.  Messrs Baillie, Carstairs Mains sold a Holstein x heifer for 215.5 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Dotchin, Cumcatch Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 213.5p to Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP: The hogg trade continues to rise this week at Borderway with an entry of 1588 prime hoggs levelling at an SQQ average of 287ppk (+7p) and an overall average of 268p (+2p) - £125 per head (+£3). Many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage. Trade topped at £164 for a phenomenal pen of six 45kg Beltex crosses from A Walker & Son, High Mindork, Kirkcowan. Top price per kilo went to a smart pen of four 41kg Beltex selling at 378ppk from R McKie, Finniness, Castle Douglas. Mules sold to £130 for a pen of twenty 49kg hoggs from BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth. Blackfaces topped at £130 for a pen of 52kg hoggs from J Wilson, Street Head, Ivegill. Hill Cheviots topped at £128 for a pen of thirty-three 46kg from Whitfield Ltd, Woodhouses Farm. Swaledale hoggs topped at £117 for a pen of twelve 47kg hoggs from G Cartmell, The Hollands, Penton.
