Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: A good variety of 60 prime steers and heifers were forward at Borderway’s weekly sale of Primestock, whereby there seemed no stopping or slowing in the trade. Topping the sale overall at £2322.77 was a marvelous 727kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle which was purchased by Pioneer Foods Carlisle. Messrs Wigham, Cold Shields, Haltwhistle sold 801kg to £2302.88 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold a 734kg to £2271.73 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold 731kg to £2233.21 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price per kilo steer of 325.5p came from a run top quality, as always, from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton selling 611kg to Hartshead Meats.

Heifers were outstanding to sell and seen a days top of £2093.03 for 645kg Limousin cross from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont purchased by John Penny, Leeds.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill sold a 675kg to £2089.13 purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold a 724kg to £2067.82 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. A Dairy bred British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle sold to £1968.56 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo and top overall on the day was paid for a 551kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton achieving 339.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Beattie, Woodfield, Annan sold a further two to 333.5ppk and 329.5ppk for 581kg and 517kg purchased by Brookwood Abattoir and Bowland Foods respectively. Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton ‘s best sold to 328.5ppk for 544kg.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger show of 92 Prime bulls forward with much more quality to be seen also.  Trade was as always flying throughout for all shapes and sizes and saw a day’s overall top of £2694.07 for a 803kg Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Norman Little Orton, Carlisle sold 778 kg to £2485.71 and Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold a lighter bull weighing 696kgs to £2251.56.  A Hereford from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head, Carlisle sold to £1961.07 for 786kg and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor,  British Blues to £1911 for 712kg crossbred from Claremont Properties, Penrith and Aberdeen Crosses to £1896.23 for 655kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top pence per kilo overall was the aforementioned 803kg Limousin from Messrs Thompson, achieving 335.5p and averaged 330.28p, 732kgs for three bulls.  Dairy bred cattle were very easily sold and saw a days top of £1850.55 for a 730 kg Montbelairde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle purchased by Messrs Fell, Settle.  Friesians to £1724.09 for 729kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie.  Fleckvieh to £1712.26 for 724kgs from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton.  Finally Holstein Friesians to £1601.65 from Gerrard House Farm, Wigton and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo of 265.5p went to Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton with this 637kgs Friesian purchased by Jewitt Meats.  More bulls required weekly to fulfil demand please advise entries by call or text to Grant Anderson on 07872 129 274

PRIME SHEEP: Trade hits new heights this week with all classes meeting unbelievable demand and returns. An overall average of 290p and a SQQ of 300p which translated to £135.07 per head this being achieved with mainly hill bred and mule lambs. The sale topped at £174 for Beltex lambs shown by Messrs Forster, Weary Hall Style, Wigton. Top per kilo at 394.6p were a pair of Beltex from Messrs Campbell, Carsewalloch, Newton Stewart. Hill bred lambs sold to £138 for Cheviots from Messrs Fell, Stage Hill, Wigton and 304.4p again for Cheviots from Messrs Whitfield, Woodhouse.
