PRIME CATTLE: A quiet day amongst the primestock steers and heifers on this Easter Monday sale, despite this a great offering was available to a full ringside of buyers seeing one of the best ever trades. The twelve steers forward sold to average a healthy 307.95ppk and £2110.97 per head and the thirty prime heifers sold to a day’s overall top of £2308.50 for a 684kg Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, purchased by Alan Jarvis, Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse sold the next best two prices at £2267.4 and £2206.67 for a 684kg and a 635kg to Messrs R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton and secondly to Messrs S Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill this heifer was also top overall price per kilo of 347.5p with Messrs Norman, Little Orton not far behind selling a 569kg to 339.5p again to Steven Wilson Butchers. Steers saw a day’s top of £2295.76 for 737kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Others to £2245.88 for 728kgs both from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake and purchased by Morgan Helliwell and Pioneer Foods, best British Blues to £2258.11 for 718kgs again for The Lake. The best price per kilo steer was for the 719kg Limousin cross achieving 318.5p from Messrs Nicholson once again and purchased by Morgan Helliwell.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller offering of 65 bulls forward on easter Monday’s primestock sale whereby trade looked as sharp as it had ever been. The heaviest bull of the day at 949kgs totalled up to the day’s top of £2842.26 for a Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Norman, Little Orton sold 822kgs to £2642.73 for another Limousin and purchased by Jewitt Meats. An 840kg Simmental from Ward Farms, Westmains Farm, Lanark sold to £2633.40. The top overall price per kilo of 321.5p went to the aforementioned Limousin cross form Messrs Norman. Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House sold 618kgs to 317.5p to Bowland Foods and Messrs Wilson, Street Head to 315.5p selling to Field Fresh Ltd. Black and White bred cattle sold to £1792.06 for a 727kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods. Holstein Friesians from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton Farm, Carlisle sold to £1725.75 for 650kgs and 683kg Friesians sold to £1635 from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie. Top price per kilo of 265.5p went to the 650kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good show of 199 cast cows was forward on Monday with the usual large ring side of buyers ensuring all cattle being sharper on the week. 61 beef cows averaged an amazing 222.5p up 14.5p on the week. Messrs Common & Son Crossdykes Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 839kg, 263.5p, £2210 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Moffat, Stonehouse sold a Limousin cross cow for 786kg, 266.5p, £2094 also purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 810kg, 257p, £2085 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh’s run of cows topped at 777kg, 257.5p, £2000 for a Limousin cross cow selling to Charles Kirkpatrick, Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm sold the top priced British Blue cross heifer for 688kg, 286.5p, £1971 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Cornthwaite sold the top priced Simmental cross cow for 822kg, 237.5p, £1952 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Wales, Thackwood cows topped at 697kg, 269.5p, £1878 for a Limousin cross to Phillip Bowe. Messrs Oliver, Cawfields cows topped at 738kg, 260.5p, £1922 and 582kg, 267.5p, £1556 to Owain Llyr (x2).

All classes of Dairy Cast cows were sharper on the week with 138 averaging 169.1p up 0.6p on the week. Messrs Sloan & Son, Woodend Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 983kg, 184.5p, £1813 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse sold a run of Fleckvieh cows for 805kg, 212.5p, £1710and 799kg, 207.5p, £1608 purchased by Thomas Fell, Messrs Roberts, Morgan Helliwell and Steven Helliwell. Messrs Malcolm Booth, Mainhill Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 854kg, 187.5p, £1601 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft sold the top priced Friesian cow for 807kg, 193.5p, £1561 and a Friesian heifer for 628kg, 22.5p, £1397 bought by Phillip Bowes and Jewitts Meats. Messrs Pigg & Son, Gaitsgill Hall Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 597kg, 227.5p, £1358 to David Holmes.

PRIME SHEEP: On Bank Holiday Monday Borderway Market held the weekly sale of prime sheep another good entry forward with more sold on the year which has been a common theme of late with new and returning vendors making the trip to Carlisle. All classes sold to an ever-strengthening trade with returns through the roof and ahead of last years rates. An overall average of 295p, SQQ 301pph, £135.78 pe head was achieved with 95% of the sale hill bred mules and 1st cross types. First time vendors DJ & VA Roper, Cleat Moor, sold a tremendous run of lambs to lead the sale at £190 per head for a pen of 46kg Beltex Hoggs with his pen averaging £167.14. Sam Roper, Cranford, and Michael Armstrong, Townhead, shared the pence per kilo honours at 419p for Beltex and Dutch Texel lambs. Mule lambs sold to £150 for a pen of Heavies from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths and 291p form Gordon Cartnell. Hill hoggs sold to £143 for 46kg cheviots from Messrs Whitfield, Woodhouses which also led per kilo at 317.8ppk.
