Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Bull Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

SPECIAL DAY FOR THE ANNANDALE HERD

The 20th Annual Spring Bull sale held on behalf of the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club had an outstanding selection of bulls on offer from the best cows and the best herds in the UK.  Bulls topped at 7,000gns to average £3854 per life with 50% of the bulls selling for or more than £4000.  A packed ringside had buyers from across the UK with all the home nations recorded on the buyers list.

The show was sponsored by Finance For Farms and judged professionally by Hugh Kennedy from the recently dispersed Stair Holstein herd in Ayrshire.  He selected Annandale Flynn as his Overall Champion who went on to sell for 3,500gns to Mr Ellwood from South Cumbria.   Flynn was bred from the Farrah cow family originally developed at Granchester Holsteins; his dam was an outstanding producer with lactations over 13000kgs at 5% butterfat & 3.5% protein.

The Annandale won all the Holstein classes and were named Reserve Champion with Annandale Ivan who topped the trade at 7,000gns going to Mr Adams from Stranraer.  Ivan was sired by the 8,000gns Annandale Kraft and bred from a high producing dam with over 11000kgs as a three year old with butterfat over 5% butterfat. The Annandale herd sold another seven bulls to average £4350.

One of the standout pedigrees was that belonging to Overside Renegade who was consigned by the Neilson family from Lanarkshire who sold for 5,500gns to Newhouse Farm in Dumfries.  He was a Renegade son with a PLI+£570, his dam was Wiltor Silver Crimson who produced 1350kgs of combined butterfat and protein in her last lactation.  She is full sister to the 2020 UK Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Wiltor Silver Centerpiece who sold for 43,000gns in the Wiltor Sale in 2019.

The Warnelview herd sold six bulls to average £3955 and topped with Warnelview North who sold for 4,800gns who was purchased by Mr Pirie from Campbeltown.  He was a son of the herd icon Warnelview Final Cut Nita EX97 who continues to impress with over 160 ton of milk produced so far.  This super young bull was born in May and was sired by Renegade, it is worth noting that the four Renegade sons in the sale averaged £4803.

The British Friesian sale topper came from the Whinnow herd owned by the Blamire family from near Wigton with two bulls selling for 4,500gns.  Whinnow Broadband was the first to sell he was sired by Inch Brilliant from the Priscilla family who was purchased by Mr Jones from Carmarthen.  Whinnow Mission sired by Beaufort Milkman from the Pauline cow family was purchased by Deernees Valley Dairy Ltd from Co. Durham.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on the 19th April and features 105 dairy cattle in Border & Lakeland Club sale.  Catalogues for this sale can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk or can be order from the Pedigree Office 01228 406230
