PRIME CATTLE: Once again an unbelievable trade witnessed in the Prime steer and heifer section with 63 forward seeing 25 cattle sell over £2000 and in that there were 17 bullocks which sold to average a whopping £2223.02 and to a day’s overall top of £2435.90 for a 753 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 735kg to £2377.73 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais crosses from first time vendor Messrs Sloan, Rigghead and Tinwald Shaws Farms, Dumfries saw their best to £2313.93 for 822kgs.  British Blues crosses again from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake peaked at £2247.83 for 731kgs purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Nicholsons run of 6 bullocks averaged a healthy 719kgs, 316.79 ppk, £2280.38 and achieved the top price per kilo steer at 329.50 for 711kgs purchased by Bowland Foods.

Eight heifers sold to £2000 or more up to a day’s top of £2193.33 for 678kgs from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouses, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and another to £2191.22 for 663kg from the same home to John Penny, Leeds.  British Blues to £2102.55 for 642kgs from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and Charolais crosses to £1918.93 for a 754kgs from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo overall of 330.5p was also achieved by Nealhouse Farm for a 663kg Limousin and purchased by John Penny, Leeds.  British Blues to 327.5p from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton.  Many more required, vendors should seriously consider when marketing cattle to take advantage of Borderways trade, please do not hesitate to contact auctioneer Grant Anderson, on 07872 129274.

PRIME BULLS: I’ve said it before and I will say it again “Never have I ever sold cattle as dear!”.  75 Prime bulls forward seeing 21 sell over £2000 and 3 selling over £3000 to a day’s overall top of £3321.65 for 967kg British Blue from Messrs Yeats, Woodhouse, Haltwhistle and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Bridekirk, Annan sold a 768kg cross bred to £2607.36 and Messrs Workman, Beeches sold a British Blue out of a Montbelairde cow to £2468.  Limousins were seen to sell to a top of £3119.33 for 995kgs from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries.  Messrs Jackson, Lane End, Wigton to £3094.79 for 873kgs and Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank, Lanark to £2868.24 for 816kg.  Messrs Campbells run of 6 Limousins sold to average 750kgs, 343.55 ppk and £2578.95. Charolais from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick sold to £2343.71 for 707kgs.  Herefords to £1863.99 for 834kgs from Messrs Baird, Red Hall, Wigton,

Top pence per kilo overall at 357.5p went to a 731 kg Limousin from Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank, Lanark purchased by Bowland Foods.  British Blues to 343.5p from Woodhouse Farms and Charolais to 331.5p from Bowsden Moor.

Black and white bulls were also off the clock with a top of £1846.13 for 675kg from Messrs Irving, Becton Hall, Canonbie for their Holstein Friesians.  Montbelairdes to £1797.60 for 672kgs from Messrs Workman, Beeches and Friesian to £1731.41 for 683kgs from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith with the top pence per kilo of 285.5p going to the Montbelairde from the Beeches Farm.  Holsteins Friesian to 273.5p from Becton Hall and Friesians to 258.5p from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith with a 567kg bull.

255 Dairy cast cows sold to average an amazing 173.6p up 11.61ppk on the week. Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill sold a Blue stock bull for 1109kg, 235.5ppk or £2611 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bell, Woodhall sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1000kg, 247.5ppk or £2475 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth Mains sold a Longhorn bull for 1198kg, 179.5ppk or £2150 to Mr Kirkpatrick. PRIME SHEEP: One of the dearest trades in history was witnessed this week as 1320 prime sheep sold to average £160.04 per head.

LAMBS: The first spring lambs of the year sold to average 409ppk. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston sold 6 Beltex spring lambs to a top of £220 (x3) purchased by King Alam and to 526.3ppk to average £215.33 or 509ppk.

HOGGS: Hogg trade saw a 50p rise on the week to a top of £210 for Beltex hoggs from Alan & Judith Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton purchased by Mike Lomax and to 473.2ppk for a pen of 8 Beltex from Mr Michael Pickworth, Dotland Park purchased by Yorkshire Halal Ltd.

Leading averages in the hoggs went to Messrs Twentyman whose consignment averaged £202 per head.

Hill hoggs sold to £168 for Cheviots from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie and to 350ppk from Messrs Whitfield, Woodhouses, great Orton.

CAST EWES & RAMS:  Cull ewes continue to sell at recent rates with less power about today. Topping at £185 for a Beltex cross from R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton. Mules were the trade of the day topping at £141 from A & J Watson, Oakbank while Hill Cheviots topped at £131 for a pen of 5 from D Graham, Hillhead.
