Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 5,805 sheep were forward consisting of 4,612 prime hoggs, 25 spring lambs and 1168 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £216 (502.3p/kg) was a pen of six 43kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton.

Messrs Mason also topped at 509.8p/kg for a pen of 10 41kg Beltex cross hoggs which sold for £209, with this same home also selling a pen of 11 46kg hoggs to make £199, a pen of 20 45kg hoggs at £198 and a pen of 30 45kg hoggs to make £193.50 and also a pen of 20 40kg hoggs to make £192.50 (481.3p/kg).

The consignment of 143 hoggs from East Farm sold to average 43.4kg £195.33 (447p/kg).

Next breaking the £200 barrier on four separate occasions was Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York firstly for a pen of five 43kg hoggs which sold for £201, with another pen of 14 40kg Beltex hoggs selling for £200 (500p/kg), and a pen of 15 41kg hoggs making £200 (487.8p/kg) and a 54kg hogg also reaching £200 from this good home. This home also sold a pen of 8 46kg to make £196 and a pen of 16 41kg hoggs to make £194 (473.2p/kg).

The consignment of 258 Beltex and Texel hoggs from Jojo sold to average 42kg £174.05 (413.5p/kg).

Also reaching £200 was pair of 45kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield.

Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park, Dufton sold a pen 50kg hoggs to make £198.

Texel hoggs topped at £184 for a pair from Messrs Griffin, Home Farm, Oakham.

Blue Texel hoggs sold to £182 for 43kg hoggs from Messrs Thompson, Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Suffolk hoggs sold to £176 from Messrs Turnbull, Boghall, Fife.

Hill cheviot hoggs sold to £156 for a pen from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown with Messrs McLaren, Fife selling a pen of 28 51kg hill cheviot hoggs to make £153(300p/kg).

Also topping the hill cheviots at 330p/kg were a pen of 27 44kg hoggs which made £146.50 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm.

Blackfaced hoggs topped at £151 for two pens of 20 49kg and 50kg hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown. This same home also sold three pens of 30 47kg Blackfaced hoggs all to make £150 with a pen of 31 45kg Blackfaced hoggs selling for £148 (328.9p/kg) and a pen of 30 46kg Blackfaced hoggs making £149 (323.9p/kg). The consignment of 341 Blackfaced hoggs sold to average £145.26 (318p/kg) for 46kg hoggs.

Swaledale hoggs topped at £139 for a pen from Messrs Procter Villa Farm.

Messrs Fisher, Haber, Crosby Ravensworth sold a pen full of 63 45kg Swaledale hoggs to make £128.50 (285.6p) with another ring full of 64 46kg Swaledale hoggs also from this home selling to make £128.50.

Hayllar Farms, Brough sold a pen of 16 41kg Swaledales to make £116.50 and (284.1p/kg).

The biggest show of sheep this season so far was forward with wagon loads of hoggs drawn to Kirkby Stephen Auction from Fife in the North, Eastingworld in the East, Grantham in the South and Workington in the West taking advantage of our leading trade week on week and out twelve plus active buyers.

Another fantastic SQQ average 331.12p/kg and an overall average of 311.7p/kg £145.64 per head for 4612 was achieved with this including over 1200 horned and mule hoggs.

Also the largest show of cast sheep sold to top at £205 for a pen of 16 Texel cross ewes from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield with this home also selling a pen of ten texel cross to make £200 and another pen of 9 £185 and a pen of ten Beltex cross ewes making £180 also from Whitley Hey Farm.

Mule ewes sold to top at £138 from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm with Messrs Clarke stripes for selling a pen of ten Mule ewes to make £136.

Swaledale ewes sold to £118 on two separate occasions from Messrs Fisher, Haber Penrith and Messrs Luck, Milestone House, Barnard Castle.

10 pens of Swaledale ewes sold between £100 and £118.

A pen of 10 Swaledale ewes from Messrs Taylor, Swathburn sold to make £112.

Blackfaced ewes sold to £115 for a pen from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Carlisle.

With Messrs Turnbull, Boghall selling three pens of 47, 34, 25 Blackfaced ewes all to make £100 each. The 223 Blackfaced ewes from Boghall sold to average £97.62.

Messrs Turnbull, Boghall, Fife also sold a pen 30 Cheviot ewes to make £118.

Cast tups sold to £170 for a Beltex from Messrs Andres, Boscar Flats.

Topping the spring lambs at £175 for 43kg Texel cross from Messrs Batty, Dry Evers.

Topping at 434.3p/kg were 35kg Texel cross lambs which sold for £152 from Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore who also sold 40kg Texel cross lambs to make £164 (410p/kg)

Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Hackthorpe very kindly offered a Beltex cross hogg to be sold for charity with the proceeds kindly being donated to Cancer Research UK. The hogg was sold five times and was purchased by D. Towers, West Scottish Lamb, G Roberts for Field Fresh Trading, Harrison & Hetherington and M Helliwell. a total of £1550 was raised.

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield also kindly offered a hogg to be sold again for Cancer Research UK selling at £250 to J Blenkhorn for Yorkshire Halal Meats. A fantastic total of £1800 was raised for Cancer Research UK.
