PRIME CATTLE: A small but decent show of 56 prime steers and heifers forward selling to similar rates to that of last week except the plainer end which would be dearer on the week. Seventeen sold over £2000 to a day’s top of £2323.42 for a 716kg Limousin cross steer from weekly vendors Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle whose run of 3 steers averaged £2205.03 for 709kgs. Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland sold 720kgs to £2156.40 and Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie to £2155.74 for 732kgs. Charolais from Messrs Cope, Kirkland Guard, Wigton sold to £2281.15 and a dairy bred British Blue from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold to £2088.32. Top pence per kilo of 324.5p went to The Lake Farm with one of the aforementioned, Messrs Templeton, West Bowhill sold a 643kg Limousin cross to 322.50p. Heifers peaked at £2217.38 for a 657kg Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Messrs Blake, Halfway Well to £2171.09 for 713kgs purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths sold 629kgs to £2110.30 purchased again by Steven Wilson Butchers. Simmental crosses to £2050 for 758kgs, from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House. Top pence per kilo overall of 339.5p went to a 563kg, Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton.

PRIME BULLS: A great entry of 103 prime bulls forward seeing the edge off last week’s phenomenal trade.  Despite this, trade proved very good for the quality and the sale saw ten bulls sell over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2708.26 for an 853kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Whinfell Park, Penrith.  Messrs Telfer, Tarn Flatt Hall, Whitehaven sold 860 kgs to £2592.90 and Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries to £2345.60 for 753kg.  Charolais from Messrs Campbell, Thrunton, Alnwick to £2366.40 for 960kgs and crossbred Simmentals to £1954.04 for 753kgs from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo of 327.5 went to a 695kg Limousin from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Newcastle purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.  Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold 614kg to 325.50 to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Eleven bulls sold over £3.00 per kilo and all were Limousin bred.  Charolais sold to a top of 289.50 for 634kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle.

Black and whites sold to a top of £1867.84 for an 832kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries and £1807.44 for another weighing 791kgs.  Two bulls sold to 239.5ppk, firstly by Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle for a 561kg Holstein Friesian and secondly by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton for 587kg Friesian.

Messrs Telfer & Son Newton High House sold two outstanding Limousin cows for 900kg, 319.5p & £2875 and 866kg, 299.5p, £2593 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of 9 Limousin cows sold to average 819kg, 243p, £1990 and topped at 972kg, 277.5p, £2697 selling to Charles Kirkpatrick. PRIME SHEEP: A smaller show of 1100 prime sheep were sold at Borderway this week as numbers continue to tighten up nationally.  After last week’s bonanza and trade slipping with the end of Ramadan, vendors would be pleasantly surprised with trade still being around the previous week’s levels.  An overall average of 290.86ppk, SQQ 296.36ppk or £143.05 per head was recorded, which favours well against other outlets.  Trade topped at £190 for heavy Texel hoggs from B E Harrison, Low House, Penrith.  Thomas Greenbank, Bolton Hall, Wigton sold the leading hoggs per kilo at 470.6ppk.

CAST EWES & RAMS:  A larger show sold away very well to similar rates of previous weeks. Topping the trade was a Dutch Texel selling for £197 consigned by JB & SM Mounsey, Ashfield. Texels topped at £191 from GA & DE Thompson, Howburn while Mules topped at £135 from the same home. With an increasing number of buyers operating at Borderway every week many more cast ewes can be handled.
