Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3247 sheep were forward consisting of 2692 prime hoggs, 39 spring lambs and 516 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hogg section at £218 (531.7p/kg) was an astounding pen of eight 41kg Beltex hoggs from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

Jojo also sold a further two pens of Beltex hoggs at £210(x5) for 46kg (456.5p/kg)  and £208(x12) for 42kg (495.2p/kg). the consignment of 162 peaches from this home sold to average 42kg 441.98p/kg £185.99.

Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton made his weekly excursion to Kirkby Stephen with another fantastic run of 150 Beltex hoggs. His leading pen of three 39kg lead the price per kilo honours at an astronomical 535.9p/kg or £209 per head. Giving a sale best consignment average of 46kg 421.93p/kg £194.09.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown sold a great run 805 expertly finished hoggs leading his consignment at £195 (406.3p/kg) was a pen of 6 48kg Texel hoggs.

This home also claimed the top price Suffolks selling a pen of 17 at £170.50 and Blackfaced at £155 for a pen of 20.

Top price hill hoggs per kilo came from Messrs McLaren, Nether Strathkinness, St Andrews who sold a pen of 34 42kg Cheviots at 339.3p/kg or £142.50.

The consignment of 420 Cheviot hoggs sold to average 45.68kg £147.32 (322.47p/kg)

An overall average of 325p/kg SQQ 344p/kg was achieved, unbelievably this shows an increase of 15p/kg on the week. This equates to £150.50 which fully displays the power of the live ring.

An nice  entry of 39 Spring lambs met a flying trade throughout, this section was topped by a single 44kg Blue Texel lamb from Messrs Jackson, Powis House which sold at £182 to Steadmans Butchers, Kirkby Stephen. This home also topped per kilo with a pair of 40kg at 440p/kg £176.

An overall average of 368.94p/kg and SQQ average of 369.12p/kg was recorded.

A plainer show of 517 ewes were forward this week with the best end in short supply.

8 pens and 41 hoggs sold between £200 and £218

46 pens and 424 hoggs sold between £180 and £218

5 pens and 42 hoggs sold between 494.9p/kg and 535.9p/kg

39 pens and 327 hoggs sold between 400p/kg and 535.9p/kg

Cast sheep topped at £180 for a Charollais ram from Messrs Storey, New Hummberbecks Farm, West Auckland.

Ewes topped at £175 for a Blue Texel ewe from Messrs Jackson, Powis House, Long Marton.

Mule topped at £120 from Messrs Hall, Lankaber, Maulds Meaburn.

Hill ewes topped at £108 for a pen of Cheviot ewes from Messrs Barker, Middle Bank End Farm.
