Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

PRIME CATTLE: A great show of 64 Prime steers and heifers forward on the first Bank Holiday Monday, of the Month whereby all cattle met a flying trade for all classes.  Topping the sale overall was a 752kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £2372.50 purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle closely follows selling 737kg to £2339.98.  Eighteen out of the 32 steers forward sold over £2000.  Charolais sold to a top of £2267.18 for 817kg from Messrs Harrington, Hoskett Hill, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  The same vendor sold 851kgs Simmental cross to £2157.29 to Mr Eric Hall.  A top pence per kilo of 321.5p went to Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland with a 720 kg Limousin purchased by Morgan Helliwell.

Heifers saw a day’s top of £2247.29 for 643kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Messrs Clanachan, McCheyston Farm, Dumfries purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.  This heifer was also the top overall pence per kilo of 3.49p.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold a Limousin cross to £2226.42 for 684kg and purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.  A 769kg British Blue cross from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold to a top of £1995.56 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  The next best pence per kilo was a 551kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wallace, Gapshields, Brampton achieving 329.50 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold the top British Blue cross to 311.5p for 574kg purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Millers run of 10 averaged a healthy 311.5 for 564kg.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 71 Prime bulls forward selling fractionally dearer on the week.  Despite being a Bank Holiday numbers were good and flesh was there to be bid for.  Topping the sale overall was an 852kg Limousin from Messrs Armstrong, Farhills, Castle Douglas achieving £2696.58.  Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold another to £2504.87. Blonde crosses from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrigg, Lockerbie to £2318.26 for 812kgs and £2116 for 736kg purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals to £2262.97 for a 907kg bull from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan.  Top overall pence per kilo of 316.5 was paid to Messrs Armstrong, Farhills for their aforementioned Limousin.

Black and whites saw a new centre record with Holstein Friesians selling to £1986.86 for 897kgs from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton.  Montbelairdes sold to 247.5 for 671kg from Seymour Farms, Wigton and Friesians to 241.50 for 603kgs from Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great entry of 296 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to the usual ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains run of Simmental cows topped at 945kg, 245.5p, £2319 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ewart & Son, Kirkhill Farms run of cows topped at 718kg, 297.5p, £2136 and 735kg, 275.5p, £2024 both purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Forrester, Down-by-rigg sold the top priced British Blue cow for 712kg, 294.5p, £2076 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Clanachan, McCheyston Farm sold a Limousin cow for 721kg, 289.5p, £2087 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Simmental cow for 841kg, 239.5p, £2014 to Alan Jarvis.

All classes of Dairy cast cows sold to a sharper trade on the week to average an amazing 172p. Messrs Little & son Kirkbride House sold the top priced Norwegian red cow for 991kg, 187.5p, £1858 to Michael Helliwell. Seymour Farms sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 803kg, 227.5p, £1826 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill Farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 832kg, 215.5p, £1792 to Les fell. Messrs Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse sold a Fleckvieh cow for 842kg, 211.5p, £1780 to Les Fell. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein Cross cow for 896kg, 193.5p, £1733 to Scotbeef. PRIME SHEEP: Prime Hoggs continue to sell at extreme rates with an overall sale average of 312ppk and £142 per head. Topping the sale at £183 was for a pen of 8 52kg Texels from D C Houldey, Kirtleton House. Top price per Kilo at 368.2p went to an exceptional pen of 3 Dutch Texels from R McKie, Finniness.

On Monday 1st May Borderway held its first show and sale for new season lambs. Winning the single spring lamb show was a beltex lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall later selling for £180 taking 2nd was a beltex from the same home this time making £173. 3rd place went to a texel lamb from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory and topping the sale at £183. Winning the pair of lambs was a pair of Texels from Messrs Slater, Rose Cottage later selling for £144 per life. Taking 2nd in the pairs was again texels this time from Messrs Lawson, High Boonwood later selling for £150, 3rd place went to a pair of Suffolks from Messrs Brough, The Clappers making £173 we also held a show for young handlers and taking the honers was Jack Musgrave (aged 10) later selling his Beltex lamb for £178. In 2nd was Ellie McNay (aged 5) later selling her Suffolk lamb for £178 and in 3rd place we had Oliver Brough (aged 2) who later sold his Texel cross for £175
