Kirkby Stephen Special May Show & Sale of Store Cattle

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington held their May Day Show & Sale of store cattle when a catalogued entry of 910 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £3700 was the overall champion a 14 month old British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby, which was bought by Messrs Wynne, Snitterton, Derbyshire. The consignment from Bridge End Farm of twenty 8 to 14 month old British Blue and Limousin steers and heifers sold to average £1650.

Next selling for £2700 was a 11 month old British Blue Heifer from Messrs Huck, Church Farm, Skipton which was bought by Messrs Park, Kirklands Farm, Irton.

Messrs Bell, Hilltop Farm, Keswick sold the third prize Limousin heifer to £2650 for a 11 month old selling to Messrs Young, Crewe.

Messrs Millar, Crookholm farm sold a 12month old Cross Bred Beef Heifer to £2600 to Messrs Carroll, Huntley.

Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn sold a Limousin cross heifer for £2400 to Messrs Scott, Forrest in Teesdale. This home also sold 14 month old Limousin steers to £2150 and Limousin heifers to £2100, with another 14 month old Limousin steer selling for £2020, with a further two Limousin heifers selling at £2000. The consignment of twelve 15 month old steers and heifers from this home sold to average £2000.83.

Messrs Huck, Church Farm, Skipton sold two 10 and 11 month old British Blue heifers to make £2380 and £2350. With a 10 month old British Blue heifer selling for £2020

Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith sold a 15 month old Limousin steer to £2000 selling to Messrs Nicholson, Carlisle

Our judges Mr J Crichton, Egremont and Miss Charisse Millard, Millom awarded the overall reserve championship to a 12 month old Limousin steer from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton

What was described as the sale of the century saw all classes the dearest seen. A packed ringside of over 71 active buyers present from Aberdeenshire to Leicestershire resulting in a heifer average of £1330.03 (+£198.08) and steer average of £1303.01 (+£85.35) leading to a overall sale average of £1315.90 which was £145.90 up on the year.

Young smart cattle were flying with Hodgson, Green Farm selling a 8 month old Limousin steers to £1690 and a 9 month old Limousin steer to make £1660.

Messrs Marston, Easegill head sold a 7 month old Limousin heifer to make £1980.

10 month old Limousin heifers from Messrs Akrigg, Manor Farm, Skipton sold to £1820.

Messrs Watson, Whygill Head selling 7 month old Limousin heifers to make £1620 and Limousin cross steers to make £1540.

The annual consignment from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm of 60 10 to 15month old Limousin and British Blue cross steers and heifers sold to average £1535.11
