Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale - Hoggs & Cast Sheep

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,838 sheep were forward consisting of 153 spring lambs, 2,177 prime hoggs and 508 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hogg section at £220 was a 47kg Blue Texel cross hogg from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton.

Topping at 508.1p/kg were a pen of eleven 37kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £188 from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

This home also sold a pen of thirteen 41kg hoggs to make £191 (465.9p/kg), a pen do seven 45kg at £191, a pen od eighteen 38kg hoggs to make £180 (473.7p/kg)

Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith sold a pen of six 82kg Texel cross hoggs to male £208, with another pen of twenty 82kg Texel cross hoggs making £199 and a pen of 71kg Texel hoggs for £198.

The consignment of 114 heavy texel and Suffolk cross hoggs from Old Hall Farm sold to average £190.74.

Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill sold 41kg Blue Texel cross hoggs to make £195 (475.6p/kg).

Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith sold a pen of five 69kg Texel cross hoggs to make £195.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown sold a pen of 42kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £190 (452.4p/kg).

Texel cross hoggs sold to 471.3p/kg for 40kg which made £188.50 from Messrs Clarke, Stripes Farm.

Two Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £184 for pens of fourteen from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a pen of thirty seven 52kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £164 (315.4p/kg), with a pen of ten 58kg Suffolks making £171 also from this home.

Hill cheviot hoggs sold to £167 and £163 for two pens of ten and sixteen from Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Brough Sowerby.

Hill Cheviot hoggs sold to 325.6p/kg for a pen of thirty five 39kg hoggs which made £127 from Messrs Turnbull, Bog Hall, St Andrews.

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £150 for a pen of thirty four 48kg hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown. Another pen of thirty four 47kg Blackfaced hoggs sold for £148 (314.9p/kg).

This same home also sold a pen of thirty 45kg Cheviot hoggs of thirty three 45kg Cheviot hoggs to make £145 (322.2p/kg)

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold a pen of forty five 46kg Cheviot hoggs to make £148.50 (322.8p/kg) with this same home selling a pen of twenty three 51kg Cheviot hoggs to make £158.50 (310.8p/kg).

Another wonderful SQQ average of 310.17p/kg and an overall sale average of 305p/kg and £145.33 for 2,177 hoggs was achieved.

Fifteen pens and 88 hoggs sold between £190 - £220

Thirty two pen and 202 hoggs sold between £180-£220

Thirty pens and 122 hoggs sold between 400-508p/kg

Thirty four pens and 211 hoggs sold between 370-508p/kg.

Cast sheep were a flying trade being the dearest seen for some time.

Topping at £180 on two occasions were a pen of Texel cross ewes from Messrs Little, Row End Farm, Soulby and also for Texel cross ewes from Messrs Bewley, Jerusalem Farm, Coulby.

Mule ewes topped at £142 from Messrs Dunning, Raisgill Hall, Tebay.

Swaledale ewes topped at £112 on three separate occasions for a pen of eight from Messrs Foster, West End Farm, Barnard Castle, and also for pens from Messrs Robson, Town End Farm, Barnard Castle and Messrs Collinson, Leekworth Gardens, Barnard Castle.
