May Fair Pedigree Sheep Sale

Beltex Section
It was the very first lot in the ring that topped the Beltex Sheep Society’s offering at Harrison and Hetherington’s May Fair Pedigree Sheep Sale at Carlisle on Friday, 26 May, when a ewe lamb named Woodies Juicy ET was knocked down for 3000gns.



This January-born ET is by the 16,000gns Woodies Explosive that sired Alan Millar’s 50,000gns and 45,000gns shearling rams sold at the Carlisle Premier last year, while her dam is the Woodhow Dakota-sired Kingledores Felicity, which is in turn out of the noted Kingledores Bessy. After some swift bidding she was sold online to the Usk Vale team of Willy Davies and Paul Rowlands.

Next in and selling for the second highest price of 1500gns was the ewe lamb pair, Woodies Jellybean ET and Woodies Jamjar ET, from the flock near Skene, Westhill. Selling to John Shedden and Sons for their Newfield Mains Flock near Kilmarnock, they are by the 30,000gns Borderesk Finders Keepers and out of Woodies Glitter, a Bailey Brook CR7 daughter.

Stuart also sold the dearest of the ewe hoggs when his Woodies Hazel ET was knocked down to J Skidmore and Co, Eastgate, Bishop Auckland. This substitute’s pedigree features Skiddaw View Endurance on to Buckles Babybel.

Ali Jackson saw his Tiptop Flock from near Annan top at 600gns when Mark Jennings paid that to take Tiptop Heidi home to his Hallcrake Flock near Kendal. Sired by Ardstewart Fireballs, she is out of the Hackney Corker daughter, Tiptop Emerald.

Hitting 580gns was Ted Benn’s Clary Donegal-sired Benndale gimmer from near Cotherstone, Barnard Castle. Bred from the Faughhill Dirty-sired Faughhill Elizabeth, she sold to Marion Mackay and heads north to Shetland.

Averages: Five embryo lambs, £1180; eight ewe hoggs, £549 (10 x £709 in 2022).

Dutch Spotted
The trip across the water was worthwhile for Tommy Jackson when he achieved the top two prices at the Carlisle May Fair. Travelling from Saintfield, County Down, Northern Ireland, Mr Jacksons ram lamb, Milltown Grizzly Grant topped trade when he sold for 7,000gns. Purchased by A & RA Middleton, Leck Fell House, Cowan Bridge, Grizzly Grant is an ET lamb sired by the renowned Carlaustan Extrovert and out of Glencoy Cherry.



Second top at 3,500gns, again from Tommy was a substitute lot, also sired by Extrovert, Milltown Gyspy Girl. Gypsy Girls’ dam, Diamond Destiny has previously bred daughters to 3,500gns (Milltown Fantasy) and 2,600gns (Milltown Foxy). Gypsy found her new home in Aghalee, Antrim, with James Johnston

Father/daughter duo, A Beattie & L Kennedy, reached 2,000gns for a pair of lambs selling with their recipient mother. Carlaustan Genevieve, a single born ET ewe lamb, is sired by Tiptop Diablo and out of an imported ewe (IM0595). Carlaustan Goofy was a natural born triplet and twinned on to the recipient ewe. Also sired by Diablo and out of an imported ewe (IM0605), Goofy is a full brother to Carlaustan Extrovert. This pair found their new home Barquhill, Wigtownshire, with M & R McCornick.

Selling for 1,800gns was Barquhill ET from M & R McCornick. Out of Williams Diamante and sired by Westbroad Diego, sire of 3,000gns Barquhill Faith, this flashy ewe hogg sold to Graeme Jackson, Mount Pleasant, Lancashire.

Finally, from D Steen, Coxhill, was Coxhill Fern selling for 1,600gns. Purchased by R Spencer & Son, Fern is out of Blackberry (IM0977) and sired by Navac Blacklaw Concrete.

Blue Texel
A brace of lambs from Allen Short’s Derg Flock led the Blue Texel Sheep Society’s offering at Harrison and Hetherington’s May Fair Pedigree Sheep Sale on Friday, 26 May, when they sold for 1500gns and 1200gns.



With both of these selling to Richard and Jade Bett for their Yarburgh Flock near Louth, first up was Derg Hot Stuff (ET) at 1500gns. Her dam, the Saltire Blue Caveman-bred Derg Dakota, has already bred lambs to 4800gns while her sire, Drumard Ed, has bred shearling ewes to 20,000gns.

Next at 1200gns was another by Drumard Ed in the shape of Derg Hercules, a ram lamb out of Saltire Disco Diva, this time a daughter of Caryl’s Blue Captain from the flock near Strabane, Northern Ireland.

Hitting the 1100gns mark when one of many to sell to A Watson, Wigton, was Geraint Williams’ Dragon Daisy which sold with her Matt’s Galaxy-sired twin ewe lambs at foot. Daisy herself is by Dragon Buster while her dam is an imported Turbo Blue ewe from the flock near Llanwnnen, Lampeter.

Stasa Moyse from Westhill, Skene, sold the other four-figure entry when her Saltire Blue Honeybee (ET) sold to SP Herraty, Campbeltown, for 1000gns. Sired by Glan-Y-Mor Einstein, her dam is the Hackney Your Joking daughter, Saltire Blue Catch Me If You Can.

The next lot and another by the Glan-Y-Mor Einstein ram, Saltire Blue Hic Up (ET) heads to Heriot, Midlothian, with Gary Fleming for 850gns. Her dam is Saltire Blue Dolly Parton, a Caryl’s Blue Captain daughter.

At 800gns was the dearest of the ewe hoggs, Saltire Blue Glitzy, which sold to Aledander Crombie, Falkirk. Her pedigree features Matt’s Escobar on to Saltire Blue Beyonce, another by Hackney Your Joking.

Three from Russell Millen, Coleraine, County Londonderry, sold for 800gns apice. First and selling to CA Jessop and Son, Ashby Road, Coalville, was Knockmult Helen (ET), which is another by Drumard Ed but this time out of Derg Fantasy, a daughter of Saltire Blue Derek.

The next two both sold to A Watson, Wigton. Knockmult Heather (ET) is a full sister to Helen while Knockmult Harriet (ET) is again out of Derg Fantasy but this time by Cleenagh Fanbadadosey.

Averages: Six pedigree ewes with lambs, £611; six weaned lambs, £1006; two embryo lambs with recipients, £971; nine ewe hoggs, £560.

Badger Face Texel
An eye-catching ewe lamb with an already proven show record proved to be the star attraction of the Badger Face Texel Sheep Society’s offering at Harrison and Hetherington’s May Fair Pedigree Sheep Sale on Friday, 26 May, when Russell Millen’s Knockmult Eternal ET sold for the top price of 7500gns.



She has some impressive price tags in her pedigree including the 8000gns Duhonw ram and the 4600gns Sunnybank Colorful, which is by the imported 46577 ram and a half sister to the 10,000gns Sunnybank Cover Girl. Eternal herself won her class at Balmoral earlier in the month where she went on to stand both Reserve Breed Champion and Reserve in the Inter-breed pairs. It was, in fact, the judge at Balmoral, Henry Jewitt, who forked out the 7500gns to take her back to his Sunnybank Flock near Barnard Castle.

Her full brother named Knockmult Edgar ET from the flock near Coleraine, County Londonderry, sold for the second highest price of 18000gns to T Gallagher, Portsalow, County Donegal.

Two more bred from the Sunnybank Colourful ewe were also in the money at 1700gns and 1600gns. Sired by in imported Drumhirk ram and the other part of the Inter-breed duo at Balmoral, Knockmult Earl ET sold to H Pedley, Little Musgrave, Kirkby Stephen, for 1700gns while a full sister to the trade leaders named knockmult Evergreen ET sold to T Jackson, Killybawn, Saintfield, County Down, for that 1600gns.

Stuart Wood from near Skene, Westhill, saw his two dearert ewe hoggs sell to Elliot Booth, New Mill, Huddersfield, for 1600gns and 1500gns, both of which were by the imported Woodies Full Monty. At 1600gns was Woodies Ding Dong which is out of an imported ewe, and at 1500gns was Woodies Delightful Girl which is out of a different import.
