PRIME CATTLE: A good entry of 58 Prime steers and heifers forward selling to a sharper trade on the week seeing 15 cattle sell over £2000+, to a day’s top of £2529.53 for an 886kg dairy bred British Blue steer from Messrs Hall, Prior Hall, Wigton purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 792kgs to £2387.88.  Limousin from Messrs Wigham, Coldshield, Haltwhistle top £2305.63 for 775kgs purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Charolais to £1955.07 for 745 kgs from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton.  Top pence per kilo steer was a 722kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake at 312ppk.

Heifers sold to £2263.67 for a Limousin from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Newcastle, this  687kgs was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold another to £2076.69 for 638kgs to Owain Llyr.  Charolais to £1978.89 for an over 30 months 751kg heifers from Messrs Hammond, Auchenbart, Ayrshire purchased by Alan Jarvis.

Top overall pence per kilo of 329.50 went to the aforementioned Limousin heifer from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, this same vendors also sold a 607kg to 324.5.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm to 325.5p and Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton to 323.5p purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Top overall was a 32month British Blue cross weighing 908kgs from Messrs Hunter Upper Brydekirk, Annan achieving £2428.90 and purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin Limousins Closely followed at £2417.19 for 818kg, from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Telfer, Newton High Howe sold 748kgs to £2277.66 and purchased by Allan Jarvis, Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton sold 703kgs to £2239.06 and Messrs Wilson, Bonkdale, Carlisle. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £204.10 for 780kgs from Ward Farms, West Mains, Lanark. Beef Shorthorns to £1851.30 for 748kgs from Messrs Frame, Little Gala, Biggar. Holsteins to £1679.10 for 772kgs from Messrs Graves, Old Town to Jewitt Meats and finally top price per kilo of 244.5p for a 591kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Workman’s and Holstein/ Friesians to 227.5p for 540kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 315 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with all classes being in great demand with a sale average of £1214 which included 62 ½ % dairy cast cows Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm selling the top prices British Blue Cow for 834kg, 297.5p, £2481 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealehouse Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow at 917kg, 269.5p, £2741 to Owain Llyr. Mr Clive Houldey, Kirleton House sold the top priced Simmental Cow which sold for 967kg, 231.5p, £2238 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Mitchell & Son, Mirkbooths sold a Limousin cross cow for 765kg, 275.5p, £2107 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Kedzlie Farms Run of cows topped at 720kg, 289.5p, £2084 for a British Blue cow bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.
