PRIME CATTLE: A mixed quality of 61 Prime steers and heifers forward on the week seeing an edge off but rather better to sell than first thought.  Still plenty cattle running into £2000 plus with eleven sailing over it to a day’s top of £2347.28 for 789kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Smith, North Boig, Cumnock sold 795kgs to £2261.78 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais to £2047.73 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton. British Blue crosses to £2029.86 for 756kgs from Messrs Story, Jackson Rigg, Longtown both purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo steer of 304.5p went to a 633kg Limousin cross from Messrs Craik, Waterside purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Messrs Craik, Waterside swept the board with his heifers selling 667kgs to £2051.03 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold 636kgs to £1993.86 and purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top overall pence per kilo of 317.5p went to the first animal in the ring a 515kg Charolais cross from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Next best at 313.5p was for the aforementioned Limousin cross from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn,

Trade topped at £2291.18 for a 765kg Limousin from Messrs Moffat, Hillend, Biggar, Lanarkshire. Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold 726kg at £2232.45 purchased by A&D Meats. Aberdeen Angus sold to £2091.85 for 782kg from Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank, Penrith also to A&D Meats and to £2069.41 from Messrs Lishman, Fell Lane, Hexham. British Blue crosses sold to £1923.65 for a dairy bred from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Simmental crosses to £1904.40 for 720kgs from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill, Lockerbie again to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold 3 Blue cows to average 833kg at 294p totaling £2449 and topped at 851kg at 305.5p totaling £2599, 814kg at 315.5p totaling £2568 and 834kg at 261.5p totaling £2180 purchased by David Holmes, Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, High Drybarrows sold a Blue cow for 749kg at 293.5p totaling £2198 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop sold the top priced Limousin cow for 755kg at 289.5p totaling £2185 and 676kg at 273.5p totaling £1848 bought by Owain Llyr and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm’s Limousin x cows topped at 757kg at 285.5p totaling to Owain Llyr. Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 676kg at 251.5p totaling £1700 to Michael Helliwell and 716kg at 229.5p totaling £1643 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hall, Prior Hall sold Holstein x heifers for 761kg at 219.5p totaling £1670, 726kg at 229.5p totaling £1666 and 689kg at 227.5p totaling £1567 to Les Fell, Charles Kirkpatrick, Sean McGimpsey. SHEEP: Another bumper show in Borderway this week with all classes showing a rise in numbers on the year, vendors were once again treated with the leading prices for their stock with our averages out of the touching distance of others. A large offering of cast sheep sold to a sharper trade on the week topping at £173 from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield with horned ewes selling to £96 from the same home. £1500 spring lambs sold to average £131.03 Or 310pph topping at £172 for a Beltex was JP Graham & Son, The Wreay, Wigton and to 400pph for Dutch Texels from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Hexham. Hoggs sold to £160 for Suffolks from TG Magee, Strathbane.
