Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 5,215 sheep were forward consisting of 980 spring lambs, 3032 prime hoggs and 1203 cast sheep.

Topping the spring lambs at £200 was a 57kg Dutch Texel cross lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which was bought by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Topping at 391.p/kg were a pen of eight 39kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £152.50 from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith, with this same home also selling another pen of 39kg Beltex cross lambs to make £150 (384.6p/kg)

Beltex cross lambs topped at £182 for a 51kg lamb from Messrs Millar, Crookholm Farm, Canonbie.

Messrs Foster, Fordham Farm, York sold a pen of twelve 42kg Texel cross lambs to make £160 (381p/kg).

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, sold a pen of ten 41kg Beltex cross lambs to make £157 (382.6p/kg)

Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick sold three pens of four 54-55kg Texel cross lambs all to make £171. The consignment of sixteen Texel cross lambs from Bassenthwaite Hall Farm sold to average £168.75.

Suffolk cross lambs sold to £160 for 53kg lambs also from Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, with a pen of 40kg Suffolk cross lambs making £143.50 (358.8p/kg) from Messrs Danby, Lower Leazes Farm, St Helens.

All classes and weights of spring lambs were a much sharper trade than the sales at the end of last week, with a sale average of 320.63p/kg being achieved and many more lambs could have been sold to seller advantage.

Commercial first cross lambs of all weights were in good demand with these types regularly selling in excess of 300p/kg-315p/kg.

Cast sheep topped at £209 for a pen of three Texel cross ewes from Messrs Clarke, Stripes Farm, Waitby.

Beltex cross ewes sold to £205 from Messrs Maughan, Ash Garth, Great Asby.

Rough fell ewes topped at £109 for a pen of eight from Messrs Dunning, Raisgill Hall, Tebay.

Swaledale ewes topped at £96 for a pen from Messrs Luck, Milestone House, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Taylor, Swathburn, Great Asby sold a pen of eleven Swaledale ewes to make £94.
