PRIME CATTLE: A great offering of 76 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a far sharper trade and a mile above that of any deadweight outlet.  Fifteen sold at £2000 or above with more than half of them achieving £2100 or more to a day’s overall top of £2188.62 for a 756kg British Blue cross steer from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Limousins peaked at £2174.37 for 726kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries sold 751kg to £2159.13 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Charolais crosses from Messrs Sisson, Fenton Farm, sold to £2057.07 for 718kgs purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and Aberdeen Angus crosses to £2018.80 for 784kg steer from Messrs Hird, Town head, Wigton purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  An 821kg Friesian steer from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton sold to £1925.25. Top pence per kilo of 299.5p was paid to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle for their aforementioned 726kgs.  Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie matched this price with their 702kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

Heifers forward in good quantity and were very easily sold to a day’s top of £2063.95 for a 650kg Limousin from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie and purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries sold 622kgs to £1943.75 again to Owain Llyr.  Top overall pence per kilo of 321.5p went to a 562kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by John Penny, Leeds.  Messrs Little’s run of heifers averaged 313.5p

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 75 prime bulls forward selling sharper on the week with the biggest lift being the plainer dairy bred bulls.  Top overall bull was a 736kg Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle peaking at £2285.28 and purchased by Field Fresh.  Messrs Mitchinson, High Green Hill sold 838kg to £2074.05 and Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna to £2073.45 for 690kgs.  Aberdeen Angus to £2155.01 for 939kgs from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle.  Top overall pence per kilo at 317.50 went top a 627kg Limousin from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1632.07 for 802kg from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries and to £1586.92 for 671kg Friesian from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle purchased by Idris Roberts.  Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Carlisle sold best Holstein to £1533 for 612kgs and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top pence per kilo of 255.5 was paid to Messrs Moscrop & Waugh for their 618kg Holstein Friesian and was again purchased by Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 300 cast cows and stock bulls was forward on Monday with quality cows in great demand but non-farm assured cows less money. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House, Wigton’s run of cows topped at 842kg at 271.5p totalling £2286 and 767kg at 263.5p totalling £2021 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm’s Limousin cows topped at 726kg at 291.5p totalling £2116 and 649kg at 259.5p totalling £1684 to Owain Llyr. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall’s run of Limousin cows topped at 849kg at 245.5p totalling £2084 and 722kg at 249.5p totalling £1801 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Wood, Well Head Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 787kg at 235.5p totalling £1853 to Messrs Roberts.

184 dairy cast cows were forward with all classes being in demand. Messrs Workman, Beeches sold the top price Montbeliarde x cow for 824kg at 207.5p totalling £1709 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 822kg at 195.5p totalling £1607 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold the top prices Fleckvieh cow for 888kg at 179.5p totalling £1593 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Thompson, Yew Tree Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 857kg at 185.5p totalling £1589 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Benson, Gill House sold a Holstein x cow for 813kg at 187.5p totalling £1524 to Phillip Bowes. Seymour Farms sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 490kg at 235.5p totalling £1153 to Les Fell. SHEEP: A bumper day in Borderway this week which saw us sell well over double the number of sheep we did on the corresponding day last year, sheep travelled from far and wide as the results achieved in Borderway are now very much the topic of conversation. Making their way from the West of Cumbria with their first consignment this year was Joseph and Julia Wilson, Meadow Farm, Camerton, they headed back along the A596 elated taking the top honours selling lambs to £182 purchased by Farmers Fresh Ltd, Wales. Local vendor Alf Thompson sold the leading pen per kilo with Beltex lambs selling at 410ppkg to Mr Robert Skelton. Hoggs sold to extreme rates on the week very much driven by the forthcoming festival these sold to £152 per head for a Texel from W Errington, Hunley and to 300ppkg for a Texel from C & D Rayson, Birch Craig.

Another large show of ewes with a rise of over 400% on the year sold to a far sharper enquiry leading at £188 from T J Magee, Ballymagorry with mules to £112 from G B & M Scott, Hayton Brow and horned ewes to £96 from Jack Sim, Chapel House, Wigton.
