Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 4,050 sheep were forward consisting of 1,672 spring lambs, 1,558 prime hoggs and 820 cast sheep.

Topping the spring lambs at £175 on two separate occasions was 47kg Texel cross lamb from Susan Sowerby, Terrys Farm Ormside with Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside also making £175 for a 48kg Dutch Texel lamb which were purchased by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Topping at 400p/kg were a pen of eight 40kg Beltex cross hoggs making £160 from Charlotte &Georgia Davies, Top Field Farm, Leicester.

Also reaching the 400p/kg mark were a pen of fifteen 35kg Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield.

Messrs Pickard, Cheney House Farm, Leicester sold a pen of six 40kg hoggs to make £156.50 (391.3p/kg).

Messrs Thompson, New Field Farm, Sedbergh sold 44kg lambs to make £159.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold a pen of eight 41kg lambs to make £158 (385.4p/kg)

C&G Davies sold a pen of five 41kg lambs to make £157 (382.9p/kg), with another pen of eleven 39kg lambs making £150 (384.6p/kg) also from this home.

Heavy lambs were in good strong demand and added up well with Blue Texel sold to £168 for 59kg from Ioan Jones, Green Bank, Brough Sowerby and 52kg Texel selling to £167 from Messrs Armstrong, Moor Riggs, Thrimby.

Messrs Pickard also sold a pen of 50kg Texel cross lambs to make £158 with 50kg Dutch Spotted lambs selling to £156 from Messrs Longrigg, Breaks Hall.

Messrs Tompson, Newfield sold 50kg lambs to make £155. With Messrs Kidd, Jardines also selling 50kg lambs to make £155.

Suffolk lambs topped at £154 for 54kg from Messrs Wearmouth, Martindale Farm, Crosby Garret.

With the slipping prime lamb trade nationally, Kirkby managed to hold their own once again with an SQQ average of 310.47p/kg and an overall average of 308.08p/kg being achieved.

Ioan Jones generously offered a Blue Texel lamb to be sold with the fund being donated to the charity Every Life Matters, a charity which means a lot to Ioan and other in the local community. The lamb was first bid to £220 being purchased by Harrison & Hetherington and was then reoffered for sale this time being purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale for £190. Thanks goes to Ioan, Morgan and the under bidders.

Cast ewes topped at £180 on two occasions firstly for a pen of twelve Beltex cross ewes and also for a pen of four Texel ewes both from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield. With this home also selling a pen of twelve Beltex ewes to £176, a pen of fifteen pen of Beltex to make £154 and another pen of twenty Beltex ewes to make £150. The consignment of 124 Beltex and Texel ewes from Whiteley Hey Farm sold to average £152.47.

Messrs Barker, Middle Bank End Farm, sold a pair of texel cross ewes to make £177.

Messrs Thompson, Grove House Farm, Darlington also selling Texel ewes to make £174.

Suffolk ewes sold to £156 for a pair from Messrs Hutchinson, Red Gate Farm.

Swaledale ewes sold to £104 for a pen from Messrs Harrison, Tailbert, Penrith. With Messrs Luck, Milestone House, Barnard Castle sold a pen of 5 Swaledale ewes to make £101.

Cast rams topped at £176 for three Dutch Spotted from Messrs Farrell, Low More, Kirkby Thore.

Texel tups topped at £168 from Sarah Wilson, Aiskew Grange Farm, Bedale.

All classes and breed of cast sheep and rams were also dearer than had been seen in the week so far with a wonderful sale average of £101.24 being achieved.
