Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2429 sheep were forward consisting of 1,238 spring lambs, 482 prime hoggs and 709 cast sheep.

Topping the spring lambs at £220 and 523.8p/kg were the overall champion pen of “High Fives” which were a pen of 42kg Beltex cross lambs consigned by regularly supporters Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside.

The overall reserve champion pen was the first placed pen of five Texel cross lambs which weighted 43kg and sold for £210 (488.4p/kg).

The judging duties of our annual “High Fives” show were able carried out by weekly buyers Mr J Birkbeck, Soulby.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm also completed a trio of pens of lambs to exceed £200 by selling a pair of 46kg Beltex cross to make £206 (447.8p/kg) selling to Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Terrys Farm also went on outside the show lambs to sell a pen of seven 42kg lambs to make £198 (471.4p/kg) and a pen of five 43kg Texel cross lambs making £186 also from this home. The consignment of 26 lambs from Terrys Farm sold to average 42.7kg and a whopping £203.25 (475.4p/kg)

Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold a pen of five 41kg Beltex cross lambs to make £182.50 (445.1p/kg)

Heavy lambs were a flying trade and were in short supply.

Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick sold 61kg Texel cross lambs to make £182, with another two pens of 56kg and 57kg Texel crosses making £180, a pen of 55kg and £176 and the first placed pen of five Suffolk cross lambs weighing 55kg and making £176 all from this home.

The run of sixteen Suffolk and Texel cross lambs from Bassenthwaite Hall Farm sold to average 55.8kg £177.44.

Messrs Porter, Knock Cross Cottage, Long Marton sold 52kg Texel cross lambs to make £181.

Texel cross Mule lambs weighing 54kg sold to make £166 from Messrs Capstick, Lockholme Hall, Ravenstonedale.

Messrs Scott, Brogden Farm, Northallerton sold a pen of four 54kg Texel cross Mule lambs to make £163, with another pen of weight 49kg Texel cross Mules making £162 also from this home.

The consignment of 50 Texel cross Mule lambs from Brogden Farm sold to average 44.9kg £145 (322.37p/kg)

Messrs Dent, Greenriggs, Kirkby Stephen sold a pen of 49kg Texel cross Mule lambs to make £152.

Several large pens of first cross lambs sold to extreme rates with a pen of eighteen 40kg Texel cross Mule lambs making £139.50 (348.8p/kg), with two pens of twenty-six and fifteen 43kg Texel cross mules selling for £140 (325p/kg) from Messrs Chappelhow, Friendship Farm, Burrells, and from Messrs Pedley, Yore House, Sedbergh.

All classes of prime lambs from 33-37kg were a flying trade and the dearest seen for some time.

An SQQ average of 338.54p/kg and an overall average of 335.9p/kg and £140.85 was achieved.

Cast sheep topped at £200 for a Texel ewe from H & B Wharton, Galloper Rise, Tebay.

Mule ewes topped at £134 from Hyde Park.

A ring-full of 20 Mule ewes sold to make £130 from Messrs Marston, South View, Winton, another pen of twenty one Mule ewes sold to make £122 from Messrs Akrigg, Home Farm, Skipton, with Messrs Metcalfe, Barningham House, Richmond selling a pen of thirteen Mule ewes also to make £122.

Swaledale ewes sold to £111 for a pen of four from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton.

All classes of cast sheep were also a flying trade and many more could have been sold to great advantage!
