PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 49 prime steers and heifers were forward, seeing a trade only people around the ringside would believe. Theres certainly to let up in the live ring as trade proves every bit as deer as 3 or 4 weeks ago.

Ten steers and heifers sell over £2000 with 9 of them selling over £2100 to a days top of £2384.64 for a 768kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont. The same vendors also sold a 752kg crossbred to £2274.80 purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold 765kg to £2207.03 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall, Carlisle. British Blue crosses to £2193.98 for 735kg from Messrs Dickinson, Krikbarrow, Penrith.

Top overall pence per kilo of 324.5ppk went to a 569kg Limousin cross from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth. Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna sold 557kg to 321.5ppk both to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.

Steers peaked at £2229.38 for a 725kg British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and to £2217 for a 799kg Limousin cross from Messrs Gate, Hollins, Cockermouth. Messrs Blake, Halfway House sold to £2200.23 for 742kg.

Topping the pence per kilo at 307.5ppk for 706kg was a Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

PRIME BULLS: A good number of 91 prime bulls were forward, seeing plainer cattle harder to sell and best fleshed a good trade throughout. Topping the sale overall was a 749kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie receiving £2273.22purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Bell sold 4 bulls to average 752kg, £2214.13. Simmentals sold to £1802.87 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart for 789kg and Dairy bred British Blues from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton, Carlisle peaked at £1794.63 for 734kg.

Top overall pence per kilo of 315.5ppk went to a Limousin cross bull weighing 692kg from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna and another to 303.5ppk for 749kg from Messrs Bell, Winterhope. British Blue crosses to 277.5ppk for 638kg from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1636.76 for a 664kh Montbelairde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle. Fleckvieh sold to £1545.56 for 627kg, from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House and British Friesians to £1540.67 for 657kg from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie. The aforementioned Montbelairde and Fleckvieh were also the joint top pence per kilo of 246.5ppk.

CAST COWS: A massive entry of 413 cast cows and stock bulls forward which sees the biggest sale of its kind in the UK for the time of year.

Messrs Jefferson, Aspatria Hall sold two outstanding cows for 986kg, 235.5p, £2322 for a Charolais and 863kg, 233.5p, £2015 for a Limousin X both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses run of Charolais cows topped at 951kg, 211.5p, £2011 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Goldie, Townfoot sold the top priced Simmental cow for 872kg, 227.5p, £1983 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Reed, Croft House sold the top priced Beef Shorthorn cow for 985kg, 217.5p, £1946 to Jewitts.  Mr Neil Forrester, Down by Rigg sold the top priced British Blue cow for 698kg, 269.5p, £1881 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Reay & Sons, West Moorhouses sold a Limousin X cow for 684kg, 265.5p, £1816 also to Owain Llyr.  Mr Mark Batty, Flimby Hall sold Limousin X cows for 693kg, 235.5p, £1632 and 689kg, 235.5p, £1622 both purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs McDowall & Co sold a Simmental X heifer for 597kg, 233.5p, £1394 to Jewitts.

All classes of dairy cast cows would be less money on the week.  Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot sold Fleckvieh X cows for 803kg, 215.5p, £1730; Richard Huston, Branetrigg run of Holstein X cows topped at 933kg, 177.5p, £1656 both to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekilns sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 654kg, 229.5p, £1500 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Vance & Sons, High Skeog sold a Holstein X cow for 766kg, 187.5p, £1436 to Philip Bowes.  Messrs Mattocks, Aulby sold a Friesian heifer for 648kg, 199.5p, £1292 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Jamison, East Nethershields sold Montbeliarde X heifers for 526kg, 199.5p, £1049 and 556kg, 199.5p, £1109 to Rob Medcalf and Jewitts.

PRIME SHEEP:  A huge show of all classes once again smashed last year’s total, whilst trade was back on the week Borderway was lightyears ahead of other outlets today. Lambs sold to £180 for Beltex from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont. Beltex lambs also led per kilo for 41kg lambs at 400p £164 from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Wigton. Heavy and smart lambs remain a nice trade with more commercial types finding a more limited enquiry.
