PRIME CATTLE: As like last week a major shortage of 35 prime steers and heifers forward seeing trade once again flying above any other outlet seeing 12 cattle sell over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2226 for 777kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries and purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold 730kgs to £2120.65 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Charolais crosses sold to £2152.45 for 787kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  British Blue steers peaked at £2134.82 for 692kg from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and was purchased by John Penny, Leeds.  Top pence per kilo of 308.00 went to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake with their 692kgs British Blue cross.

Heifers sold to £2166.29 for 691kg from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, this heifer was also top overall pence per kilo at 313.5p and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Crichton also sold second top in a 730kg Charolais cross equating to £2127.95 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousin heifers sold to a top of £1980.80 for 640kg from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

Clean cattle are way short of requirements in Borderway at this time and vendors should look to take advantage of our trade compared to dropping trades elsewhere.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 70 Prime bulls forward selling to a very similar trade on the week, still best quality and fleshed bulls shone through.  Top overall was still a whopping £2702.40 for a 960kg Limousin from Messrs Struthers, Collielaw, Lanarkshire which was purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals to £1986.10 for 809kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and the same vendors selling the top Maine Anjou to £1903.86 for 757kgs at only 12 months of age.  These bulls were purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir and Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Blonde crosses to £1917.51 for 794kgs from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries purchased again by Jewitt Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo bull came from Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie with a 663kg Limousin cross attaining 296.5p and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle to 295.5 for a 643kg Limousin cross.  Black and white bulls topped at £1628.90 for a 961kg Holstein Frisian from Messrs Gemmell, Brownfield, Dumfries which was purchased by Alan Jarvis and a top overall pence per kilo of 235.5p was paid to Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham with their 548kg Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS: A small show of 269 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday.  Messrs Whiteley, Pond Farm, Thirsk sold 4 outstanding British Blue cows to average 929kg, 283.5p £2634 which topped at 952kg, 283.5p, £2698 and 935kg, 287.5p £2688 and 923kg 281.5p £2598 and 907kg 281.5p £2553 purchased by Owain Llyr x2 and Charles Kirkpatrick x2.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, sold a Limousin cow for 681kg, 253.5p £1726 and a Simmental x cow for 675kg 221.5p £1495 bought by Owain Llyr and Michael Helliwell.  Mr Steven Illingworth, Howgillside sold a Limousin cow for 823kg, 237.5 £1954 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick .  Messrs Stamper & Sons, Harriot Hill Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 665kg, 227.5 £1512 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Read, Midtown Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 821kg, 225.5p £1851 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a Limousin cow for 711kg, 225.5p £1603 to Messrs Roberts.  Messrs Bird, High Wreay farm sold Limousin x cows for 817kg 219.5p £1793 and 792kg 215.5p £1706 both bought by Messrs Roberts.

A plain show of dairy cast cows were forward.  Messrs Rome, Fauldie sold a Holstein x cow for 885kg 177.5p £1570 to Philip Bowes.  Messrs Beaty, Langhorn Farm sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 883kg 175.5p £1549 to Les Fell.  Messrs Clark, Whins Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 800kg, 183.5 £1468 to Jewitts who also bought Messrs Hutchinson, The Hill, Friesian cow which sold for 782kg 185.5p £1450.  Castlesteads Farms sold a Holstein x heifer for 697kg 207.5 £1446 to David Holmes.

CAST BULLS: 9 stock bulls were forward.  Messrs Steen, Coxhill Farm sold the top priced Beef Shorthorn stock bull which sold for 1173kg, 173.5p £2035 bought for Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Irving, Bectonhall sold the top priced Angus stock bull for 1052kg 173.5p £1825.50 to Jewitts.  Messrs Thornton, Stainton Farms sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 972kg 175.5p £1705.

PRIME SHEEP:  Another great turn out of 1700 lambs here at Borderway, trade for all classes sold well beyond vendors expectations considering returns posted in other outlets last week.  An overall average of 293p, SQQ of 295p is a result that looked an impossibility pre-sale.  Two vendors for West Cumbria shared the top price of the day at £168 both with Texel lambs from Messrs Sim, Orchard House, West Newton and Messrs Hetherington, Blue Dial, Allonby.  The east of Carlisle was well represented too with Messrs Lishman, Fell Lane Farm, Barrasford heading the pence per kilo at 415p (40kg £166) and selling 4 pens over £160 per head.  More sheep required next week to satisfy demand with all classes easily placed, continental lambs regularly 280-290p.
