Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday night, when 4083 sheep were forward consisting of 2113 spring lambs, 432 prime hoggs, 1282 cast sheep and 256 store lambs.

Topping the prime lambs at £198 was a 51kg Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick.

Topping at 402.4p/kg were a pen of six 41kg Beltex cross lambs which made £165 from C & G Davies, Top Field Farm,

Leicester. This same home also sold a pen of twelve 40kg Beltex cross lambs to make £151 (£377.5p/kg).

The consignment of 62 lambs from Top Field Farm sold to average 40kg/£146.13 (365.3p/kg).

Heavy lambs were a flying trade with Texel cross lambs selling to £179 for a 61kg lamb from Craig Douglas, Wetheriggs Farm, Penrith.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold a pair of 46kg Beltex cross lambs to make £171 (371.7p/kg).

Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm sold 45kg Texel cross lambs to make £170 (377.8p/kg).

This same home also sold 55kg Texel cross lambs to make £170, a pen of eight 59kg Texel lambs at £168, a pen of three 56kg Texels at £164 and a pen of three 55kg Charollais lambs at £162.

The consignment of 32 lambs from Bassenthwaite Hall Farm sold to average 54.8kg £162.84 (297.2p/kg).

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon sold 50kg Beltex lambs to £170 (£340p/kg) with a pen of seven 50kg lambs making £162.

Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Shap sold 58kg Texel cross lambs to make £170.

Messrs Pickard, Cheney House Farm, Leicester sold a pen of 53kg Beltex cross lambs to make £168.

Mule lambs topped at £120.50 for a pen of 49kg lambs from Messrs Dent, Greenriggs, Kirkby Stephen.

Mules also topped at 263.4p/kg for a pen of 41kg which made £108 from Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Penrith.

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield sold a pen of twenty one 35kg Beltex cross lambs to make £130 (371.4p/kg)

An overall sale average of 292.6p/kg for 2013 lambs was achieved which bucked the national downwards trend in trade so far this week.

33 pens and 96 lambs sold between £150 - £198

25 pens and 146 lambs sold between 350-402p/kg

Cast Sheep were a flying trade for all classes.

Topping this section at £250 were a pair of Texel ewes from Millar, Crookholm Farm, Canonbie.

Closely following at £236 was a Beltex ewe from Messrs Teasdale, Ling Cottages, Penrith, who also sold Texel ewes to £233 for a pair and another pen of three Beltex cross ewes to make £199.

Messrs Raine, Stanhope Gate Farm sold a pen of four Texel ewes to make £222, with another two pens from this home selling at £200.

Craig Douglas, Wetheriggs Farm, Penrith also sold Texel ewes to £222.

Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith sold a pair of Texel cross ewes to make £220.

Mule ewes sold to £125 for a pen from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Great Asby.

Swaledale ewes topped at £105 for a pen of three from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby.

Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a pen of four Swaledale ewes to make £101.
