Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: A lot less forward on the week with only 41 presented to a keener ring side of bidders with all cattle selling sharper on the week.  Still ten cattle sell over £2000 a price unachievable on any other system.  With a days top of £2220.47 for a 767kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries sold next best at £2214.14 for 781kgs to Eric Hall.  Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt all the way from Hexham secured £2142.30 for a 740kgs.  British Blues peaked at £2165.00 for 783kgs from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow, Penrith and a Fleckvieh to £1739.02 for 697kgs from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham.  Top pence per kilo of 289.50p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Lawson, Hundith and secondly by Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt.

Heifers were very easily sold also with a day’s top of £2147.75 for a 710kg Limousin cross purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith, Wigton sold 726kg to £2109.03 again to Steven Wilson Butchers.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont to £2040.33 for 655kg Limousin cross and purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Messrs Crichton also sold top priced Charolais cross to £2112.53 for 687kgs and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

More clean cattle are required on a weekly basis.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 87 Prime bulls forward on the week which saw trade less for all types.  The days bull trade topped at £2484.82 for a 988kg British Blue from Messrs MacKay, Harelaw Farm, Glasgow and purchased b Owain Llyr Livestock.  Messrs Taylor Skirling Craigs, Biggar sold a 746kg crossbred to £2055.23 purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Limousins to £2179.80 for 840kgs from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton and to £2018.56 for 749kg crossbred for Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie. Messrs Fletcher, Black Cleugh, Lockerbie sold theirs to £2004.46 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Charolais to £1945.32 for 696kgs from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries.  This bull was also top overall pence per kilo at 279.50p. British Blue crosses to 275.50p for 746kg from Skirling Craigs, Biggar and Limousins to 274.5p from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries purchased by Bowlands Foods.

Dairy bulls topped at £1361.42 for 669kg Montbelairde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle and a top ppk of 204.50p for 605kg Friesian from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 227 Cast cows and Stock bulls was forward with trade being sharper on the week.

Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales run of Limousin cows sold to a top price of 790kg 229.5p £1813 and 657kg 235.5p £1547 both purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Wallace, Gapshield sold a Limousin x cow for 797kg 205.5p £1637 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm run of Limousin x cows topped at 612kg 227.5p £1392 again to Owain Llyr.

All classes of Dairy cast cows would be sharper on the week.  Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole sold the top priced Friesian cow for 881kg 169.5p £1493 to Jewitts.  Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft run of Holstein x cows topped at 854kg 173.5p £1481 and a Fleckvieh cow sold for 847kg 167.5p £1418 to Michael Helliwell and Les Fell.  Messrs Carlyle, Bleaberry Rigg sold a Holstein x cow for 913kg 157.5p £1437 to Pickstocks.  Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm Holstein x cows topped at 932kg 153.5p £1430 to Pickstocks.  Messrs Todhunter & Son, Stonehouse run of Holstein x cows topped at 894kg 157.5p £1408 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Poots, Several Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 592kg, 227.5p £1346 to Eric Hall.  Messrs Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg Farm, sold Montbelairde x heifers for 598kg 215.5p £1288 and 560kg 203.5p £1139 to Eric Hall and Rob Medcalf.  Crossfell Holsteins sold a Holstien x heifer for 645kg 203.5p £1312 to Sean McGimpsey

CAST BULLS: 10 Stock bulls were forward.  Messrs Tudhole, High Parsonbridge sold the top price Limousin stock bull for 1117kg 217.5p £2429 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Wright & Son, Hunthills sold a Limousin stock bull for 1126kg 189.5p £2133 again to Owain Llyr.  A Charolais stock bull consigned by Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses weighed 1257kg 167.5p £2105 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Poots, Several Farm, sold an Angus bull to Eric Hall weighing 1152kg 175.5 £2021.

PRIME SHEEP:  The weekly sale of prime sheep saw 2420 head forward. A rise of 900 head on last years date as new vendors were once again in attendance all seeing the value of the Borderway ring. Overall average was 275p, SQQ 276p to level at £119.06 per head. Robbie Graham, Harley Croft, Wigton lead the day’s trading with a superb lamb selling at £166 or 404.5ppk to Mr A Dawson. Closely followed at £164 and £162 by Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston whose run averaged £143.94. Messrs Lishman, Fell Lane Farm, Hexham also sold lambs to 400ppk. David & Harry Hope, Mouldy Hills, Canonbie enjoyed a rip roaring trade for Mule lambs selling to £131 for a pen of 14.
