Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: An improvement in weather curtailed the number forward but the reduction in numbers ensured trade dearer on the week.  Less weight was on offer but plenty flesh evident seeing seven cattle sell over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2130.66 for a 684kg British Blue cross heifer from Penny Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth and purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.   Simmental crosses to £1834.57 for 766kg from Messrs Reid, Bengall, Lockerbie and another to £1825.58 both purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie sold a handy 582kg Charolais cross to £1731.45 again purchased by Mr Eric Hall and Aberdeen Angus to £1710.80 from Messrs Reid, Bengal, Lockerbie.

Top overall price per kilo of 311.5 went to Penny Stamper with her aforementioned 684kg British Blue cross.  Mark Stamper, Rose Farm, sold top Limousin cross to 309.5 for a 651kg purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop.

Steers sold to a top of £2127 for Limousin cross steer from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold a 710kg crossbred to £2112.25 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  British Blue steers sold to £2054.97 for 774kgs from Hundith House, Wigton and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle sold best Limousin cross to £2026.75 for 670 kg purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo steer was one from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well selling 710kg to 297.50 purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

PRIME BULLS: A very welcoming much improved trade was witnessed at Borderways weekly sale of Primestock bulls with 76 selling to a trade easily 15-20p better.  Best bulls with weight easily over £2000 with a days top of £2600 for an 880kg Limousin cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan selling to A & D Meats.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton sold an 820kg Limousin to £2423.10 and a smaller weighted bull of 691kgs from Messrs Hunter, sold to £2152.47 to Field Fresh.  Charolais crosses to £1838.35 for a 703kgs from Messrs Tattersall, Enzieholm, Langholm to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Galloways to £1729.84 for 799kgs from Klondyke Farm, Dumfries.  Top overall pence per kilo of 311.5p went to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk 691kg Limousin cross and to 300.5p for 693kg from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat.

Dairy bred bulls also miles better to sell seeing Holstein Friesians sell to £1444.20 for 664kg from Messrs McKay, Broughton Mains, Newton Stewart and a top pence per kilo of 227.50p for 589kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rigg.

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 206 Cast cows were forward on Monday with extra buyers coming to Borderway ensuring the trade would be sharper on the week.

D A Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm run of Continental cows sold to average 740kg, 207p £1535 and topped at 861kg, 227.5p £1958 for a British Blue x, 734kg 221.5p £1625 for a Limousin x and 732kg 215.5p £1577 for a Simmental x purchased by Owain Llyr and Frank Smart x 2.  Messrs Jackson, Lane End sold a Limousin cow for 842kg, 207.5p £1716 to Frank Smart.  The top priced Charolais cow was consigned by Messrs Todhunter, Greyrigg and sold for 827kg 207.5p £1716 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bell, Winterhope Farm, run of Limousin  x cows sold for 703kg, 233.5p £1641 and 651kg 225.5p £1468 and 738kg 209.5 £1546 bought by Michael Helliwell, Sean McGimpsey and Messrs Roberts.

Bluestone Farming run of Fleckvieh cows and heifers sold to a top price of 773kg 249.5p £1928 and 756kg 229.5p £1735 for heifers and 901kg 167.5p £1509 and 826kg 177.5p £1466 for cows to Messrs Roberts and Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall run of Holstein x cows topped at 927kg 169.5p £1571 and 853kg 169.5p £1445 to Les Fell and Jewitts.  Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 647kg 189.5p £1226 to David Holmes.  Messrs Little, North Greenhill sold a Holstein x heifer for 639kg, 189.5 £1210 to Les Fell.  Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein x heifer for 547kg 187.5 £1025 to Les Fell.  Messrs Williamson, Barrowmoor Farm, sold a Friesian heifer for 522kg 185.5 £968 to Les Fell.  Messrs McKie, Stoneybrook Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 588kg 185.5p £1090 to Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP:  A fantastic show of 2096 prime lambs and 525 cast sheep were forward at Borderway this week. All classes seeing a mark up in price on the week. Lambs sold to average 283.4ppkg for all weights, grades and classes with lambs from 30kgs upwards with all a flier. Topping the trade at £180 was a pen of 4 Texel lambs which were consigned by Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite Hall, Penrith to Bowland Foods. Top pence per kilo was 400p paid for a 43kg Dutch Texel selling at £172 to Robert Skelton. Suffolks sold to £170 for heavies from Messrs Mcgill, Kerricks Farm, Dumfries. Ewes sold to £220 for Dutch Spotted’s from Messrs Clarke, Williamswood purchased by Lancashire Direct.
