PRIME BULLS – A decent entry of 87 prime bulls forward with all classes a little shade easier on the week. Nine bulls still sold over £2000 and to a day’s overall top of £2315.83 for an 814kg British Blue x from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats. Next best was Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Carlisle with a 728kg Limousin Cross attaining £2209.48 and purchased by Messrs Metcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Lanark sold two bulls to £2183.34 and £2101.44 for 749 & 704kgs purchased by A & D Meats and Field Fresh. Simmentals sold to £1965.44 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and Aberdeen Angus crosses achieving a total of £1929.48 purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Top overall pence per kilo of 303.5p was the previously mentioned Limousin cross from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill. Dairy bulls sold well overall and topped at £1486.23 for 642kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House. Fleckviehs to £1470.32 for 627kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Friesians to £1413.08 from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by A & D Meats, top pence per kilo of 234.6p went to the Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham and next best was a Friesian from Messrs Preston, Wedholme House, Wigton at 232.5p purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet again numbers remaining very tight seeing trade rise once again this anniversary sale week a Borderway Market. Topping the sale overall was the pre-sale show champion, which was kindly judged by Mr Jim Craig, Ballard Butchers, Castle Douglas she was a 652kg Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg selling to a gross of £2317.86 she was also the days top price per kilo at 355.5p purchased by Messrs Kitson, Yorkshire. Next best was a 711kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith achieving £2236.10 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold a 705kg to £2217.23 and purchased by Mr Steven Wilson Butcher Shop, Corby Hill. Top British Blue cross heifer was 610kg from Messrs Little Greenhill, Wigton equating to £1997.75 purchased by Frasers Butcher Shop, Stranraer. The second top price per kilo overall went to the 3rd prize heifer from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna selling 597kgs to 351.5ppk to Messrs Kitson, Yorkshire. Steers sold to a top of £2275.44 for a 797kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dickson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top British Blue cross was 669kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle selling to £1950.14 purchased by Hartshead Meats. Top pence per kilo was 306.5 and went to 677kgs from Messrs Nicholson and purchased by Messrs Kitson, Yorkshire.

CAST COWS – An increased entry of 228 cast cows and stock bulls was forward on Monday with extra buyers around the ring which resulted in a 20p a kilo lift on the week. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 1032kg at 209.5p totalling £2162 and 709kg at 243.5p totalling £1726 purchased by Frank Smart and Alan Jarvis. Kedzlie Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 933kg at 217.5p totalling £2029 for a Limousin x 887kg at 211.5p totalling £1876 for a Luing and young cows from the same home sold for 660kg at 273.5p totalling £1805 and 590kg at 267.5p totalling £1578 for a Limousin x and a Luing sold for 638kg at 257.5p totalling £1642 purchased by Frank Smart (x2) and Eric Hall (x3). Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold Limousin cows for 723kg at 239.5p totalling £1731 and 741kg at 231.5p totalling £1715 bought by Michael Helliwell and Owain Llyr. Messrs Ritson, The Barns sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 989kg at 185.5p totalling £1834 to Les Fell. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold the top priced Hereford cow for 790kg at 219.5p totalling £1734 to Frank Smart.

171 dairy cast cows forward with the better end of cows selling 20p up on the week. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold two 4 year old Norwegian Red for 967kg at 195.5p totalling £1890 and 888kg at 165.5p totalling £1469 bought by Frank Smart and Scotbeef. Messrs Rogerson, Wardpark sold an 8 year old Fleckvieh cow for 789kg at 203.5p totalling £1605 to Frank Smart. Messrs Edgar, Whitecroft Mains sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 946kg at 169.5p totalling £1603 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm sold a 4 year old Fleckvieh cow for 756kg at 197.5p totalling £1493 to Frank Smart. Castlesteads Farms sold a Holstein x cow for 828kg at 179.5p totalling £1486 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Clark, Whins Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 759kg at 195.5p totalling £1483 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs McKie, Stoneybrook Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 633kg at 195.5p totalling £1237 to Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP - A massive entry of 3780 sheep were forward at Borderway this week which is an incredible 1400 up on last year’s corresponding date. A huge thank you to all vendors for your support, each and every one of them would be elated with returns again this week, as Carlisle stood proudly 10+p per kilo above all other operators today.  The pre-sale anniversary show was judged by Mr Michael Bowe on behalf of Worsley’s Wholesale Butchers his champion came from the single lamb class consigned by M/s Musgrave Cardew Hall Dalston which went on to sell at a sale leading £180 or 418.60ppkg. Reserve honours went to M/s Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford with their pen of 5 Texel x lambs which sold at £156 To AR Livestock Services Limited. Matching the leading price at £180 was the first prize young handler Emma Wigham a massive congratulations to all. All classes shapes and weights of lambs were keenly bid for with 10 active buyers ringside resulting in some extraordinary returns, more required next week!
