PRIME CATTLE: A slightly smaller entry of 45 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby numbers remain well short of requirements. Quality would be well back on the week but trade was right up there to match. Topping the sale overall was a 773kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith receiving £2315.14 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a 761kg Limousin cross to £2302.03 purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie to £2221.04 for 789kgs purchased again by Les Fell. Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton sold Charolais to £1940.84 and a 576kg Belted Galloway sold to £1437.74 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle selling to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top steer pence per kilo of 302.50 went to the aforementioned Limousin cross from Adam Lawson, Hundith House.
Heifers sold to a day’s top of £2140.20 for 696kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth and purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Brough, Old Rectory sold a 713kg Limousin cross to £2135.44 and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton Carlisle. A light weight Charolais cross heifer from Messrs Crozier, Raggetsyke, Lockerbie sold to £1603.95 for 578kgs. The top overall pence per kilo of the day went to Mark Stamper with a lovely 597kg Limousin cross attaining 308.5ppk.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 87 prime bulls forward seeing a lesser quality show on offer. Trade looked far sharper than last week with best meated bulls shining through once again. Top bull was an 810kg Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith achieving £2247.75 and another for the same home to £2173.50 for 756kg both purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie sold 746kg to £2077.61. An Aberdeen Angus cross out of a dairy cow from Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Longtown sold for £1711.32 for 647kg to Bowland Foods, Preston.
Top pence per kilo of 289.5p went to Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle for a 665kg Limousin cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Black and whites sold to £1603.98 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and a top pence per kilo of 246.5 went to a 583kg Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.

CAST COWS: An increased number of 248 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer. Only 63 beef cast cows forward with all classes up on the week. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 774kg at 259.5p totalling £2008 to Owain Llyr. Mr Richard Wilson’s run of cast cows topped at 819kg at 221.5p totalling £1814 for a Blue x bought by Frank Smart. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold the top priced Charolais x cow for 814kg at 221.5p totalling £1803 also to Frank Smart. Edward Dean, Kirkhouse Farm sold the top priced Simmental x cows for 794kg at 225.5p totalling £1790 to Micheal Helliwell.
173 dairy cast cows were forward with a plain show resulting in better cows sharper again on the week. Messrs Vance & Sons, Newton Stewart’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 939kg at 169.5p totalling £1591 and 855kg at 185.5p totalling £1586 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Harrison, Brackney Hill sold a Holstein x cow for 878kg at 167.5p totalling £1470 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 789kg at 185.5p totalling £1463 to Les Fell. Messrs Chappelhow, High Grounds sold a Holstein x heifer for 195.5p to Jewitt Meats. Messrs McGarva, Horseclose Farm sold an Ayrshire heifer for 191.5p to Les Fell.

Messrs Millar, Lochend Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1229kg at 167.5p totalling £2058 to Pickstocks. PRIME SHEEP: Another great show of 2524 prime sheep forward this week showing another positive on last year’s date. Buyers commented sheep in general are slightly lacking finish, nevertheless a great trade was attained once more. Messrs A Walker, High Mindork, Newton Stewart was the leader this week selling Beltex lambs to £178 purchased by Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton. Messrs Walton did the double when selling 43kg Beltex at 358.1 to Robert Skelton. An overall average of 270 SQQ 271 or £115.24 shows a great result on the year.
