Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,526 sheep were forward consisting of 1,507 prime lambs and 1,019 cast sheep.

Topping the sale prime lambs at £200 and 454.5p/kg was a 44kg Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside.

Messrs Pickard, Cheney House Farm, Leicestershire sold a 61kg Beltex cross lamb to make £185 who also sold 51kg lambs to make £170  with a pen of thirteen 39kg lambs making £160.50 411.5p/kg and a pen of seventeen 41kg lambs selling for £151 (368.3p/kg) all from this home. The consignment of 130 lambs from Messrs Pickard sold to average 41.7kg £146.60 (351.6p/kg)

Charlotte and Georgia Davies, Top Field Farm, Leicester sold a pen of three 50kg Beltex cross lambs to make £180, with a pair of 46kg lambs making £172 (373.9p/kg, a pen od 44kg making £166 (377.3p/kg) and a pen of nine 38kg lambs to make £143 (376.3p/kg) The consignment of 40 lambs from this home sold to average 40.8kg £148.69 (364.4p/kg).

Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon sold 48kg lambs to make £176.

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon sold a pen of four 42kg lambs to make £160 (381p/kg) who also sold 43kg lambs to make £162 (376.7p/kg)

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold a pen of Texel cross lambs to make £175.

Messrs Teward, New View Farm, Darlington sold 65kg Texel lambs to make £172.

Messrs Pedley, Yore House, Sedbergh sold 60kg Texel lambs to make £172.

Messrs Park, Kirklands Farm, Holmrook sold 49kg Texel cross lambs to make £171.

Once again good meat, well fed, and quality bred lambs were wanted and demanded extreme rates here at Kirkby Stephen Mart.

10 pens of lambs sold between £170-£200

37 pens and 97 lambs sold between £150-£200

26 pens and 125 lambs sold between 350-454p/kg

An SQQ average of 275.13p/kg was achieved with an overall average of 272.81p/kg.

Good meated well fed bred lambs sold to premium rates here at Kirkby Stephen with numbers of these types falling short of buyers requirements and many more can be sold to great advantage.

Mule lambs sold to £114 from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Sedbergh.

The annual young handlers show was held which witnessed a fantastic turnout of youngsters displaying their handling skills with our judges Mr Steadman & Mrs Judy Dodd, Temple Sowerby carrying out the difficult task of judging.

Cast sheep sold to £228 for a pair of Beltex cross ewes from Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond, this same home sold a pen of four ewes to make £208, and another pen of ten Texel cross ewes making £190 all from Carkin Moor Farm.

Mule ewes sold to £128 from Messrs Sayer, Musgrave House, Great Musgrave.

Swaledale ewes sold to £82 from Messrs Stobart, Stotley Hall Farm, Barnard Castle.

Cast rams sold to £178 for a pair of Texel rams from Messrs Brunskill, Chapel House Farm, Crosby Garrett.
