PRIME CATTLE: A small entry of only 48 prime steers and heifers forward on Bank Holiday Monday weekly primestock sale. Whereby a flying trade for all classes was witnessed with a day’s overall top of £2297.70 achieved for a 726kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg. Messrs Dickinson Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold 680gns to £2111.40 purchased by Mr Eric Hall a 703kg Simmental cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold to £2007.07 and purchased again by Mr Eric Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of 325.5p went to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a 552kg Limousin cross this was purchased by Steven Wilson, New Butchers Shop, Mains Street, Brampton. Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries sold 625kgs to 321.5p and Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold 557kgs to 320.5p purchased by John Penny, Leeds. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm sold his best to 319.5p to A & D Meats. Steers sold to a top of £2272.50 for 796kgs from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Lawson Hundith House, Wigton sold 709kgs to £2109.28 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, Top pence per kilo steer was a 650kg Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle at 297.80 and purchased by John Penny, Leeds matching the same price was the 709 kg crossbreed from Messrs Lawson, Hundith, Wigton.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of 66 prime bulls forward on Bank Holiday Monday which saw a good trade throughout, peaking the trade was an 807kg Limousin bull from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith achieving £2287.85 purchased by Morgan Helliwell the same home sold 971kgs to £2286.71. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold 867kgs to £2232.53 both purchased by A & D Meats and Messrs Hird, West End sold to £2141.88 for 745kgs purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blues to £2174.78 for 813kgs from Messrs Davidson, Aultown, Abington. Beef Shorthorns to £1755 from Messrs Ryder, Holme House, Carlisle and an Aberdeen Angus out of the Holstein from Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo of 305.50p went to Messrs Hird, West End for a 659kg Limousin Cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Dairy bred bulls were very good to sell, not as many heavy bulls about as a whole. Topping at £1361.12 went to a 609kg Holstein/ Friesian for Ellaway Ltd, Elephant Farm, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top price per Kilo of 224.5p for a 569kg Holstien/ Friesian from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS: A similar entry of 244 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with trade being strong throughout.

Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill farm sold two Limousin cows for 690kg, 267.5p, £1845 and 835kg, 213.5p, £1782 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Burrow, Lodge Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 776kg, 237.5p, £1843 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Bunting & Son, Midtown Farm sold a British Blue cow for 707kg, 253.5p, £1792 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hutchinson, Hollin Close sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 759kg, 233.5p, £1772 to Alan Jarvis.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand Castlesteads Farms sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 866kg, 175.5p, £1519 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Swainson & Son, Moor Park Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 674kg, 213.5p, £1438.70 Sean McGimpsey, Messrs Dockery, Kelsick House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 836kg, 167.5p, £1400 to Pickstocks. Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale. Holstein cross cows topped at 833kg, 167.5p, £1395 and 848kg, 157.5p, £1335 to Pickstocks and Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP: Another fantastic number forward this week signing off August in style as 3000 more head passes through the ring compared to 2022. As overall average of 271pph and a SQQ of 273 was achieved again way ahead of opposition. New vendors Messrs Thompson, High Hall, Wigton hit the high notes this week selling to a top of £186 for a stunning Texel cross lamb which also led the sale per Kilo at 404.3ppk and sold to Lancashire Direct Wholesales Ltd. The leading average came from Messrs Scott Thirlwall Castle who sold 18 to average £145.77. Suffolks sold to £149 from Messrs Crayston, Sheepfields. Ewes were an absolute Flyer at £222 for Texels from Messrs Bainbridge, Belmont selling to Lancashire Direct.
