Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

PRIME CATTLE: An increased entry of 57 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale of Primestock whereby all classes as usual of late were a dream to sell!  A day’s top of £2421.04 being achieved by Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith for an 848kg Limousin cross steer, this was purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Dickinson also sold top priced British Blue cross to £2300.60 for 803kgs purchased by Hartshead Meats.  Charolais crosses from Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle sold to £2189.79 for 767kg and Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont sold 738kgs to £2180.79 purchased by Mr Les Fell.  Messrs Wallace, Gapshields, Brampton sold a 631kg Galloway steer to £1549.11.  Top pence per kilo steer was a 669kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith achieving 303.5p purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Heifers sold to a top of £2190.38 for 649kg from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory Farm, Carlisle and £2189.02 for a 683kgs for the same home both purchased by Steven Wilson, Corby Hill & Brampton Shops.   Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold a 638kg Limousin cross to £2146.87 purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.  First time vendors Messrs Strong, Barton Hall, Penrith enjoyed a good day’s trading selling over age Beef Shorthorn heifers to £1701.32 for 693kg and £1671 for 670kg.

As a shortage of numbers drives trade higher on a weekly basis new and old customers should take advantage of this trade at this time.  Steers and heifers required weekly.

PRIME BULLS: A fantastic entry of 106 Prime bulls forward resulting in a great trade throughout with majority of cattle selling 5-10p sharper on the week.  Top bull of the day came from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie selling a 941kg Limousin to £2460.72.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold a 754kg crossbred to £2152.67 and Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington to £2118.60 for 769kgs to A & D Meats.  British Blue crosses to £2247.83 for 731kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton, and Simmentals to £1985.10 for 780kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo overall was the aforementioned British Blue cross for Osbourne Farm, selling to 307.50.  Limousin crosses to 297.50 for 650kgs from Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill purchased by Field Fresh.

Dairy bred up to £1554.39 for a 623kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Holstein Friesian to £1352.58 for 655kg from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 249.50 went to the Fleckvieh from Beck House and Friesians sold to 230.50 for 555kgs from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Heads Nook, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS: An increased entry of 300 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with all classes being sharper on the week. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow for 965kg at 215.5p totalling £2079 to Frank Smart. Messrs Miller, Crookdale Mill sold the top priced Charolais cow for 943kg at 219.5p totalling £2069 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Mitchinson & Sons, High Greenhill’s run of cows topped at 789kg at 239.5p totalling £1889 for a British Blue x and 751kg at 243.5p totalling £1828 for a Limousin x purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Maxwell Farming Co’s run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 837kg at 211.5p totalling £1770 and 771kg at 219.5p totalling £1692 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Frank Smart. Messrs Park, Kirklands Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 682kg at 251.5p totalling £1751 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Beaty, Newton Field sold a Limousin cow for 647kg at 249.5p totalling £1614 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Hall sold the top priced Staberlizer x cow for 637kg at 243.5p totalling £1551 to Micheal Helliwell. Mr Edward Dean, Kirkhouse Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 632kg at 239.5p totalling £1513 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of dairy cast cows would be sharper on the week. Messrs Jackson & Son, Lingstubbs sold the top priced Friesian cow for 833kgs at 203.5p totalling £1695 to Frank Smart. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 891kg at 165.5p totalling £1474 to Les Fell. Messrs Fearon, Low Row Scales’ run of Holstein x cows topped at 885kg at 165.5p totalling £1464 and 894kg at 161.5p totalling £1443 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Pickstocks. Moscrop and Waugh sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 738kga t 193.5p totalling £1428 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Fearon, Low Row sold a Holstein x heifer for 574kg at 209.5p totalling £1202.

PRIME SHEEP: A massive show of prime and cast sheep forward again this week as trade in this centre eclipses all others with new and returning vendors really gathering pace and being rewarded with returns far and beyond the reach of others. Several vendors see lambs sail past £150 to a top of £166 from Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, who was joined by another 700 plus lambs from his area with Mrs Carr, West Farm a close second at £165 followed by a vendor making a long waited return to Borderway Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith who sold pairs to £162 and £160. Topping per kilo was local supporter Messrs Laird, Unity at 371.4p selling to Bowland Foods Ltd. Top average this week was Messrs Fell, Harley Croft who sold 20 to average £146.10.
