Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 52 Prime steers and heifers and still sell short of demand seeing an absolute flying trade once again in Borderway’s weekly sale.  Eighteen of the 52 forward sold at £2000 or above with 10 selling above £2200 to a day’s top of £2312.14 for 772 kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie, this being purchased by Hartshead Meats.  Other Limousins to £2276.73 for 738kgs from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton.  Charolais steers to £2284.22 for 773 kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie.  The three steers from this home averaged £2256.86 for 774 kgs.  British Blue dairy bred sold to £2165.97 and £2165.31 from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton.  A pure Galloway steer from Messrs Wallace, Gapshield, Brampton sold to £1656.80 for 651kg selling to Mr Les Fell.

Top pence per kilo steer at 314.5p was a 702kg Limousin cross for Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle with Messrs Nicholson, The Lake closely following this at 313.5 for 697kg again selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Heifers sold to a day’s top of £2283.91 for a 706kg Limousin cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by Steven Wilsons, Corby Hill and Brampton Butchers Shop, Carlisle.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold best British Blue cross to £2160.31 for 698kg purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Top overall pence per kilo of 329.5p came from Mark Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth with a superb 600 kg Limousin cross, closely followed by Messrs Brough, Old Rectory selling 659kg to 328.0p to Steven Wilson, Butchers shops and Joe Little, Greenhill, Wigton to 323.5p for a 558kg Limousin cross.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller but good quality show of 84 Prime bulls forward selling to a good straight trade, once again plainer sorts looked dearest.  Top of the day was 1032kg, 34 month old Limousin from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick Upon Tweed achieving £2265.24 selling to Owain Llyr.  The same home also sold a 732kg 16 month old bull to £2228.94.  Simmentals to £2208.47 for 1107kg from Messrs Ward, West Mains, Lanark purchased by Alan Jarvis.  British Blues crosses to £2031.33 for 714kg from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle to A & D Meats and Charolais crosses to £1988.18 from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna for 735kg to Field Fresh Ltd.  Top pence per kilo of 304.5p went to the lightest bull of 732kgs from Bowsden Moor.  Messrs Little, The Guards, Carlisle sold 640kg Limousin to 300ppk purchased by Morgan Helliwell.

Best Black and Whites were a 610kg Friesian from Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham selling to £1360.94 to Bowland Foods, Preston and a top pence per kilo of 225.5p from the same home for a 585kg Friesian selling to Jewitts Meats, Spennymoor.

CAST COWS: an increased entry of 301 cast cows and stock bulls was presented to an increased ring side of buyers which again resulted in Borderway driving the trade up.

Haregills Farming Company sold the top priced Limousin cow for 846kg, 234.5p, £1983 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Steen, Coxhill Farm sold a run of Beef Shorthorn cows which topped at 930kg, 209.5p, £1948 purchased by Frank Smart. Messrs Hutchinson, Bail Hill sold a Limousin cow for 802kg, 241.5p, £1936 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm Shop sold a Limousin cross cow for 784kg, 243.5p, £1909 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold a Limousin cow for 801kg, 237.5p, £1902 purchased by Owain Llyr. PRIME SHEEP: Another fabulous turn out in all categories this week and vendors were rewarded with their choice of outlet and returns well above anything achievable elsewhere. An SQQ of 274p and a per head average of £117.24 is obscene for September. Messrs Wigham, Hargill House led the way with 46kg Dutch Texel lambs selling at £185 or 402ppk to Lancashire Direct Halal Ltd, Blackburn. Brian Strong, Grapes Barn, Caldbeck also saw 400ppk for 41kg Texel x lambs (£164) purchased by Yorkshire Halal Ltd, Ossett. Ewes sold to a great enquiry topping at £220 for Texels from Messrs Smith, Roachburn.
