Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday night, when 3,400 sheep were forward consisting of 1,835 prime lambs, 1075 cast sheep and 490 store lambs.

Topping the sale at £188 were a pair of 50kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which were bought by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Topping at 415p/kg were a pen of eleven 40kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £166 from Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport. This same home also sold a pen of three 40kg lambs to make £164 (410p/kg) and a pen of nine 39kg lambs to make

£158 (405.1p/kg).

Mr Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont topped at £181 for a pair of 46kg Beltex cross lambs @ (393.5p/kg). This same home also sold 45kg lambs to make £176 and 47kg to £175 with a pair of 45kg making £166.

JM Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of five 40kg Beltex cross lambs to make £163 (407.5p/kg) with this home also topping at £170 for 46kg lambs. They also sold a pen of four 41kg lambs to make £161 (392.7p/kg) and a pen of four 41kg making £160 (390.2p/kg).

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold a pen of ten 43kg Beltex cross lambs to make £167 (388.4p/kg)

Page Farm Partnership. Ripon sold 52kg Beltex cross lambs to make £167.

Messrs Little, Row End Farm sold a pen of four 39kg lambs to make £153 (392.3p/kg).

Mr Maughan, Woodfoot, Crosby Ravensworth sold a pen of seven 41kg lambs to make £160 (390.2p/kg)

Messrs Barker, Middle Bank End Farm sold 55kg Rouge cross lambs to make £170.

Mule lambs sold to £125 for a pen of fifteen from Messrs Burrow & Rutter Armstrong, Langwathby Hall, Penrith with another pen of ten Mules making £119 from the same home.

Lightweight lambs sold to strong rates with a pen of 36kg Blackfaced selling to make £88.50.

A SQQ average of 282.2p/kg and a overall sale average of 275.9p/kg was achieved.

35 pens and 124 lambs sold between £150 - £188

32 pens and 135 lambs sold between 350 – 415p/kg

Cast sheep topped at £240 for a pair of Texel ewes from Messrs Wilson, Lowfield Cottage, Appleby.

Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall also sold Texel ewes to £230 with Messrs Todd, Victoria Cottages, Bishop Auckland selling Texel cross ewes to £220 and a pair of four to £200.

Strong, heavy and meaty ewes of any breed were good to sell being dearer on the week.
