Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: An improved entry of 79 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale of Primestock.  Trade seen a slight decrease on last weeks red hot trade but still remaining a flying trade throughout especially for best fleshed cattle.  Topping the sale overall was a tremendous Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont with 747kg achieving £2140.16 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold a 707kg Limousin cross to £2117.47 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Crichton sold best Charolais to £2073.83 for 709kgs purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top overall pence per kilo was a 602kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to 320.5pph and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Steers sold to £2127.83 for 735kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo steer was a Limousin cross weighing 676kg from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well at 295.5 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold a 692kg Limousin cross steer to 291.5 again purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle

PRIME BULLS: A fantastic entry of 121 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale whereby all classes sold dearer on the week.  Twelve bulls sold over £2000, eleven sold over £2200.  A days top of £3046.40 achieved for a 1024kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith.  Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries sold 991kg Limousin to £2789.67 and Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith sold another to £2700.87 for 914kgs.  British Blue crosses sold to £2231.25 for 750kgs from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle selling to A & D Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo of 316.5 went to Messrs Goldie with 743kg Limousin, Messrs Jenkinson best was 825kg at 313.50 and Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna sold 733 kg to £305.5 purchased by Field Fresh

Black and white bulls sold to £1502.46 for 612kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Holstein Friesians to £1491.69 for 689kg from Messrs Wilson, Southview, Penrith.  Top price per kilo of 245.5 was paid to Messrs Graham for the aforementioned Fleckvieh.

CAST COWS: The largest show of 385 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with a large ring side of buyers ensuring all classes being sharper on the week. Messrs Airey, The Close sold an outstanding Limousin x cow for 733kg at 289.5p totalling £2122 to Owain Llyr and 884kg at 227.5p totalling £2011 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 949kg at 219.5p totalling £2083 to Charles Kirkpatrick. DA Harrison, Hill House’s run of cows and stock bulls averaged an amazing 800kg at 224p totalling £1792 and topped at 890kg at 233.5p totalling £2078 and 870kg at 223.5p totalling £1944 for Limousin crosses and 720kg at 247.5p totalling £1782 for a British Blue cross purchased by Frank Smart(x2) and Owain Llyr. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s run of 5 Limousin cows sold to average 779kg at 225.5p totalling £1752 and topped at 859kg at 235.5p totalling £2022 and 754kg at 239.5p totalling £1805 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.

All classes of dairy cows were in great demand. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein x cow for 847kg at 182.5p totalling £1588 to Frank Smart. Messrs Hutchinson, The Hill sold a Holstein x cow for 890kg at 175.5p totalling £1561 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Davidson, Muirhouse sold a Holstein x cow for 903kg at 167.5p totalling £1512 to Les Fell. Bluestone Farming’s run of Fleckvieh x cows topped at 848kg at 175.5p totalling £1488 to Les Fell and heifers from the same home sold for 679kg at 215.5p totalling £1463 and 626kg at 233.5p totalling £1461 to Capper Farming and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hall & Co, Whitlawside Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 748kg at 195.5p totalling £1462 bought by Frank Smart. Messrs Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg Farm sold the top priced Montbeliarde x heifer for 570kg at 229.5p totalling £1308 to Capper Farming. Messrs Mattock, Aulby Farm sold the top priced Friesian heifer selling for 761kg at 221.5p totalling £1685 to Sean McGimpsey.

Messrs Bell & Son, Hill Top Farm sold the top priced British Blue stock bull for 966kg at 227.5p totalling £2197 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 985kg at 219.5p totalling £2162 to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison also sold a Limousin stock bull for 778kg at 227.5p totalling £1769 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: An absolutely fantastic effort by vendors this week, on a wet and soggy morning. Thankfully their efforts were well rewarded as the 3174 prime and cast sheep on offer met another trade way in excess of competitors. An overall average of 265ppk, SQQ of 270ppk or £115.48 shows a great return of the time of year.

The top price of the day was £164 paid for 41kg Dutch Texel lambs which was also the top price per kilo at 400ppk paid to Messrs Storey, Wood Head, Hexham. Peter McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton hot on the heels at £162 or 370.7ppk for Beltex both lots purchased by Mr A Dawson. Texel sold to £160 twice for heavies from Messrs Storey, Limestone Cottage, Penrith, both to Alex Riley. Suffolks sold to £134 from Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham, with Mules to £120 from Messrs Hope, Mouldy Hills, Canonbie.

Leading average per head today went to Messrs Thompson, Wood Head, Scaleby who sold to a top of £155 for Texels and averaged £152.
