Kirkby Stephen Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual September store cattle sale.

Topping the sale at £2080 was the Overall Champion beast which the first placed Limousin steer from Messrs Wright, Hunthills, Dumfries which was successfully purchased by our judge Matthew Brown, Bridlington.

Our judge Mathew Brown awarded the overall reserve championship to the second placed Limousin Steer from Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Shap which went on to sell for £1700 at 12 months old.

Messrs Hodgson also sold 12 month old Limousin Steers to £1865 with 12 month old British Blue steers making £1775 and £1655. The five yearling steers from this home sold to average a whopping £1700.

Limousin heifers sold to £1760 and £1745 from Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn.

Bank House Farms, Cowan Bridge sold Limousin heifers to £1755.

Messrs Benson, Gamswell, Ulverston sold a pair of Limousin cross steers to make £1700.

Messrs Wood, Waters Farm sold a pair of 14 month old Limousin steers to make £1625.

Luing Bullocks sold to £1675 twice and £1635 twice from Messrs Steadman, Ellergill.

Trade was described as outstanding with the averages speaking volumes, with steers averaging £1345.68 (up £212.07 on the year) and heifers averaging £1305.44 (up £184.12). And possibly the dearest trade ever seen so far.

All ages and classes of cattle were in demand with plenty of smart yearling bullocks and heifers selling in excess of £1500 up to £1800.

127 Limousin steers forward sold to average £1404.

Vendors were over the moon with their trades today with many literally receiving hundreds  more than their expectations.
