Kirkby Stephen Breeding Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd Kirkby Stephen held their annual sale of Continental, Mule Ewes, Shearlings and Gimmer lambs when a catalogued entry of 1,803 sheep were on offer.

Topping the female section at £460 on four separate occasions were pure Texel two shears from Messrs Teward, New View, Darlington. This same home went on to sell Texel two shears for £400 and three shears for £350 with Shearlings also selling for £450, £400, £370 and £340 twice.

The consignment of 30 Texel Ewes and Shearlings from New View sold to average a massive £323.10.

The Pre-Sale Show which was judged by Mr B C Percival, Bakewell, awarded the first placed pen of Ewes/Shearlings to a pen of five Texel cross Shearlings from Messrs JC & E Pedley & Sons, Yore House, Sedbergh which went on to sell for £258 to the judge.

Taking second place was a pen of five Beltex cross Shearlings from Mrs Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle which sold for £285 to Messrs Askwith, Crook.

The first placed pen of five Gimmer lambs went to a pen of five Dutch Texels from Messrs Armstrong, Moorriggs, Penrith which sold for £150, with the second placed pen also going to this home and also selling for £150.

Breeding Ewes and Shearlings were a flying trade from start to finish being one of the dearest seen, with a fantastic overall average of £207.19 for all breeds being achieved.

Texel cross Mule Shearlings sold to £232 for a pen of sixteen from Messrs Thornborrow, Ladying Farm, Winton who also sold another pen of twenty to £228.

The consignment of 102 Texel cross Mule Shearlings from Ladying sold to average a whopping £206.75.

Messrs Slack, Stoneriggs, Hilton sold pens of Texel cross Mule Shearlings to £220 with other pens of twelve making £215 and two pens of ten making £215 and £212.

Mule Shearlings sold to £180 for a pen of twelve from Bailey Livestock, Ripon.

The judging of our ram section was carried out by Mr Malcolm Skidmore, who awarded the overall Champion Ram to the first placed AOB Shearling from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm which went on to top the sale at £2100 selling to JW Dent & Sons, Naby View Farm.

Reserve Champion Ram went to P & E Chester, Grassgill Lodge for their first placed Beltex Shearling which went on to make £1300. These vendors also sold a second Beltex Shearling for £1300.
