GREENGRASS HITS TOP SPOT WITH SMOOTHIE
The September Border & Lakeland catalogue resembled a Black & White sale catalogue from a few years ago with elite pedigrees featuring throughout. The quality of the milkers matched the pedigrees on offer with buyers having an outstanding group of high yielding animals to select from. Milking animals topped at 3,600gns on two occasions to average £2202 per life. The sale also included the Greengrass Youngstock sale that topped at 5,500gns to average £2095.
Paragon Veterinary Group sponsored the show with Dan Bargh owner of the Woodclose herd near Skeleton judging the pre-sale classes. He selected Heathersgill Rubicon Margaret as his overall champion who was consigned by the Graham family from Anguswell Farm. Sired by Rubicon and bred from seven generations of cows that classified Excellent or Very Good she sold for the joint top price of the day at 3,600gns to Mr Coulthurst from near Preston. The Heathersgill herd sold another four heifers to average £2835 including Heathersgill Dallian Liza for 2,800gns selling to Mr Reed from Devon.
Taking the Reserve Champion rosette was a super uddered heifer consigned by Skirwith Hall Farms near Penrith. Stowbeck Dalliance Hilary was bred from an Excellent Gen-I-Beq Brawler dam and sold for 3,500gns to Mr Reed from Devon. The Stowbeck herd sold another eight heifers to average £2467 including Stowbeck Darwin Lydia who sold for 2,500gns going to the same buyer.
One of the best pedigrees to feature in the catalogue was Woodcatt Montarna SK Ashlyn who was consigned by Will Horsley & Eammon Monaghan. This strong framed heifer was sired by Sidekick her dam is an VG87 2yr Lambda that place 2nd at UK Dairy Expo in 2020 with her fifth dam was the 2001 World Dairy Expo & Royal Winter Fair Champion, Tri-Day Ashlyn EX96. Woodcatt Montarna SK Ashlyn was purchased by Mr Coulthurst from near Preston. The Horsley family also sold Woodcatt K Doc Melinda for 3,400gns who was purchased by Baltier Farming Company.
Adam Mares owner of the Greengrass Holstein herd near Darwen in Lancashire sold an outstanding group of heifers in the Greengrass Youngstock Sale. These heifers were bred from several elite cow families including Apple, Supra, Licorice, Jodie, Sizzle, Alicia & Allie. This wonderful group topped at 5,500gns to average £2095 per life.
Topping at Greengrass sale at 5,500gns was Greengrass Chief Smoothie who was bought by David Leyburn in N. Ireland. Smoothie was sired by Stantons Chief and bred from eleven generations of Excellent or Very Good cows going back to Glen Drummond Aero Flower. Her grand dam is an outstanding cow Greengrass Fever Smoothie, she is due with her sixth and is currently classified Excellent 95 points.
The sale featured three heifers that traced back to KHW Regiment Apple Red with Greengrass Unix Apple selling for 4,000gns. She was sired by Unix, her third dam was Greengrass Olympian Apple EX94 with Apple being the fifth dam. This special heifer was bought by David Leyburn in N. Ireland.
Also selling for 4,000gns was Greengrass Diamond Rapture who is the potential seventeenth generation to classify Excellent. This stylish young heifer was bought by the Templeton family from Knowe Farm in Ayrshire.
