PRIME CATTLE: Yet another good entry and offering of 64 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway weekly sale, whereby a sharper trade was witnessed on the week.  Nine cattle sold over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2166 for a 709kg British Blue cross heifers from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  A 624kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold to £2024.88 purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill, and Brampton shops.  An Aberdeen Angus heifer from Messrs Currie, Skewbridge, Dumfries sold to £2011.32 purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top overall pence per kilo of 324.5p went to Messrs Blakes aforementioned 624kg Limousin cross.  Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold a 593kg crossbred to 320.5 purchased by David Paisley Butcher, High Street, Wigton,

Steers sold to a day’s top of £2150.41 for a 718kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a 679kg to £2094.72 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle sold a Charolais cross steer to £2048.20 purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill and Brampton.  A tremendous run of Blue Grey Steers from Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose, Brampton sold to a top of £1590.05 for 590kg and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

PRIME BULLS: Another great show of 85 prime bulls forward selling exceedingly well with all classes selling every bit as dear as last week.  Twelve bulls sold over £2000 and six sold over £2300 to a day’s top overall of £2739.66 for 924kg Limousin from New View Farms purchased by A & D Meats.  Next best from the same home was 913kgs to £2734.44.   Messrs Struthers, Greenbank Farm, Lanarkshire sold 888kgs to £2606.28 and 847kgs to £2570.65. British Blues crosses from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle sold to £2194.41 for 758kgs and Charolais to £2066.63 for 835kg from Sean Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith.  Top price per kilo overall was a 621kg Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

Black and white bulls sold to £1558.21 for 691kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitts Meats and a top pence per kilo of 236.5 for a 591kg Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS: The largest entry of 415 cast cows at Borderway was forward on Monday with all buyers ensuring a great trade. Messrs Saunders, Maidenlands, Ulverston sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 791kg, 281.5p, £2226 and 748kg, 251.5p, £1881 both purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Campbell & Son, Thrunton, Alnwick sold the top priced Angus cow for 1029kg, 189.5p, £1949 to Frank Smart and the top priced Charolais cow sold for 896kg, 217.5p, £1948 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Macdonald, Ladyhousesteads run of cows topped at 909kg, 205.5p, £1868 for a Limousin cross and a Limousin cross heifer sold for 573kg, 261.5p, £1498 purchased by Scotbeef and Les Fell. Messrs Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill sold a Limousin cross cow for 611kg, 225.5p, £1377 to Jewitts. Messrs Fowlie, Alford Limousin cross cows topped at 627, 221.5p, £1388 to Messrs Roberts.

All classes of dairy cast cows were good to sell. Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekilns sold the top priced Fleckvieh cross cow for 863kg, 191.5p, £1652 to Frank Smart. Messrs Rogerson & Son, Ward Park sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 727kg, 225.5p, £1639 to Alan Jarvis. Castlesteads Farm sold Holstein cross heifers for 778kg, 209.5p, £1629 and 807kg, 193.5p, £1561 bought by Les Fell and Frank Smart.  Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm sold Friesian heifers for 731kg, 217.5p, £1589 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 761kg, 205.5p, £1563 to Frank Smart. PRIME SHEEP: A huge show of 3628 prime and cast sheep forward this week which saw many new and returning vendors, which was very pleasing with all leaving delighted with their returns and overall average of 264p, SQQ 270p is again way above any returns elsewhere. Regular vendors Messrs Wigham, Hargill House sold a great run of sheep with a cracking pair of 43kg Dutch Texels from this home selling at £172 or 400ppk to lead both sections on the day. Heavy lambs sold to £153 for a pen of 25 texel cross mules from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House, Workington. Tom and Julie Airey and team, New Grange, Dearham once again lead the consignment averages selling a wonderful run of 45 Continental cross lambs to average £144.02. Suffolks sold to £131 from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield with Mules to £125 from Gordon & James Taylor, Spoutbank. Ewes a wonderful trade to a top of £175 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Lloyd Fowlie, Guise, Aberdeen.
