PRIME CATTLE: A much larger offering pf 77 prime steers and heifers forward with a huge proportion of native cattle featuring in this weeks sale. Trade achieved the same as previous weeks and saw a day’s top of £2253.24 for a 792kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold to 733kg to £2202.67 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses sold to £2210.34 for a 748kg steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Dairy bred British Blue steers sold to £1818.86 for a 729kg from Messrs Barker, Little Broomhills, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle sold another run of 8 Blue Grey and Galloways to a top of £1547.58 for a 601kg, Blue Grey steer purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shops, Corby Hill & Brampton.

Top pence per kilo steer was the aforementioned 733kg Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill at 200.5ppk.

Heifers peaked at £2173.06 for 716kg Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Show, Gret Orton, Carlisle.  Mulholland Butchers also purchased the next highest heifer at 709kg crossbred from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle equating £2052.56. Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold 673kg to £2015.64 purchased by A & D Meats and a Simmental from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan to £2028.36 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. A Dairy bred British Blue from Messrs Irving, Becton Hall, Canonbie sold to £1754.91 for 666kg, purchased again by Mr Eric Hall.

Top overall pence per kilo of 322.5ppk went to a 592kg, Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill selling to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, with Messrs Graham, Millar Hill Brampton closely following selling 551kg to 321.5ppk purchased again by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 94 prime bulls forward selling ever so slightly less on the week. Despite this as a whole all best fleshed bulls were still a joy to sell. Topping the sale overall was a 766kg Limousin from Messrs Knox, Cragside, Kelso peaking at £2278.85. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie sold 845kgs to £2277.28 and Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold 876kgs to £2220.66. British Blue crosses to £2199.31 for 759kgs from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats. Saler crosses to £2037.58 for a 745kg bull from Messrs Sobart, The Square, Carlisle. A Maine – Anjou sold to £1959.23 for 755kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Charolais crosses to £1934.03 for 723kg from Messrs Tattersall, Enzieholme, Langholm purchased by Bowland Foods. Top Overall price per kilo of 301.5 and 300.5p went to Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna with 644kg and 697kg Limousin crosses both purchased by Mutch Meats, Whitney. Black and White bulls sold to £1594.85 for 747kgs. Friesians from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie, Purchased by Jewitt Meats and Holsteins from Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers, Silloth to £1586.43 for 713kgs, top price per kilo of 226.5p came from the same home this time selling a 646kg Friesian.

PRIME SHEEP:  Boundaries were broken again this week in Borderway as 4100 prime and cast sheep were sold which included a colossal show of 3496 prime lambs.

Every sheep in the market was sold to Vendors advantage with many marking their first trip to Carlisle. An overall average of 271ppk or an SQQ of 275ppk puts us in the league beyond any other centre today.

The sale leader this week was a 44kg Dutch Texel lambs from regular consignors Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle Greenhead which sold at £178 or 405ppk to Mulholland Butchers, Greta Orton.

Heavy lambs were a terrific trade selling to £168 for 63kg Texel from Messrs Storey, Limestone Cottage, Penrith with Texel cross Mules to £155 from first time vendors Foster Hall & Sons, Ashview, Tow Law.

Suffolks sold to £148 for a pen of 4 from J & D Longlands Ltd, Tine Hall, Hexham.

Mules sold to £128 for 52kg from Kilnstown Farms Ltd, Carlisle.
