Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller entry of only 43 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby all vendors forward had a fantastic trade throughout, numbers are well short of buyer’s requirements.  Top overall was a 770kg Limousin cross steers from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £2352.35 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. The same vendors also sold 723kg to £2201.54 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 680 kg British Blues to £2057 purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Charolais to £1983.59 for 669kg from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Galloway steers to £1607.78 for 663kg from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle purchased by Hartshead Meats and Blue Greys from the same home to £1502.40 for 617kg.

Top price per kilo steer of 307.5 went to a Limousin from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake weighing 699kg and purchased by A & D Riley.

A small show of heifers resulted in a day’s top of £1878.40 for a 640kg Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top overall price per kilo of the day went to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton with a 570kg Blonde cross selling to 321.5 purchased by A & D Riley.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller entry of only 64 prime bulls forward selling at least 10-15p sharper on the week. Topping the trade was the furthest travelled animal in the auction a 919kg Limousin from Messrs James, Blaencowin, Carmarthen, Wales achieving £2890.26.  Lighter bulls to £2423.23 for a 774kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, The Reddings, Moffat.  Messrs Wilson also sold the top overall pence per kilo of 323.50p for 691kg purchased by Mutchmeats, Witney.  Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport sold 597kg to 319.5p purchased by Field Fresh, Conway.

Black and white bred bulls sold to £1642.87 for a 643 kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to Mutchmeats.  Holsteins to £1573.33 for 611kg from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton, Holstein Friesian to £1525.68 for 624kg from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor with top pence per kilo of 257.50 for the above from Messrs Little, Kirkbride Hose, Wigton, Holstein

CAST COWS: Once again, a good entry of 364 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with farm assured and well finished cows being in demand. Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 957kg, 197.5, £1890 to Frank Smart. D A Harrison & Co run of cows topped at 864kg, 209.5p, £1810 for a British Blue cross cow to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Pattinson, Boshawside sold the top priced Limousin cow for 774kg, 233.5p, £1807 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Conlon, Common Carr Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 469kg, 255.5p, £1198 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh sold a young Limousin cross cow for 627kg, 243.5p, £1526 to Alan Jarvis. PRIME SHEEP:  Borderway once again hits the top spot with a massive show of lambs forward leaving vendors delighted with there trade for all classes of lambs. Topping today’s sale at £178 was a Texel lamb from Messrs Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford closely following at £170 another Texel from the same home. Topping today’s price per kilo at 367p was also a Texel this time from Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill. Second best today was a Dutch Texel at 359p from Messrs Bird, Unity.

CAST SHEEP: A smaller show was presented to the fiercest live ring in the UK resulting in top returns for all classes of ewes. Topping today’s trade at £185 was an outstanding texel ewe from Messrs Kirkbride, Flimby Hall. Following this at £128 was a run of 9 Texel ewes this time from Messrs Lowery, Stone Hall. Topping the rams at £175 were 2 Cheviots from Wynholm Farms. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald topped at £140 for 9 Texels.
