PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 54 prime steers and heifers forward on the week with trade a little easier. Despite this 21 animals sold over £2000 and ten over £2100 to a days top of £2289.53 for a 735kg British Blue cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Limousin cross heifers to £2132.15 for 724kg from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont again purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Crichton also sold top Murray Grey cross to £2055.63 for 715kg purchased by Eric Hall. Charolais cross heifers to £2018.45 for 730kg from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo heifer of 315.5 went to a 602kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Steers sold to £2284.92 for 792kg once again from Messrs Dent, Elm House, purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Hutton, Fern Lodge, Carlisle sold 777kgs to £2179.49 and Messrs Graham, Cumdivock, Carlisle to £2157.98 for 748kg purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Chappelhow, High Ground, Penrith sold top British Blue cross steer to £2246.36 for 712kgs purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais crosses to £2226.10 for 788kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Bowshaw, Lockerbie purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Top pence per kilo and joint top of the day was 315.5 for the aforementioned British Blue cross from Messrs Chappelhow, High Ground. Holsteins Friesians steer sold to £1960.81 for 8467kg from Messrs Armour, Mitton, Moffat purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger entry of 111 prime bulls saw trade ease 10p on the week except the very biggest and best quality. A very plain offering was on sale and as a whole and plenty under finished bulls were evident. Top overall was an 819kg Limousin cross from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, achieving £2551.19. The same home also sold another to £2456.93 for 799kgs purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold 788kgs to £2438.86, 781kg Charolais crosses to £1854.88 from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie. Simmentals to £1846.16 for 752kgs from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.
Top price per kilo overall was 311.5 for the aforementioned from Cleughbrae Farm. Messrs Struthers Collielaw Farm, Lanarkshire to 310.5 and Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk to 309.50. Black and white bulls sold to £1394 for 644kgs Holstein Friesian form Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats and the same home sold Holsteins to £1328.22 for 628kgs again to Jewitt meats. Top pence per kilo of 226.5 went to a 581kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Sloan, Woodend Farm, Moffat purchased by Jewitt meats.

Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 887kg, 229.5p, £2035 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Campbell Strawfrank Farm run of cows topped at 848kg, 217.5p, £1844 and 680kg, 229.5p, £1560 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owail Llyr. Messrs Little, The Guards sold a Limousin cow for 714kg, 257.5p, £1838 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Cowx & son, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 861kg, 211.5p, £1821 to Charles Kirkpatrick. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 23rd October 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep in Borderway market. A colossal show of 4713 head were forward, this being the largest show presented in Carlisle for well in excess of a decade. Each and every sheep was met with ferocious competition displaying new levels of buying power in Ring 2 this resulted in an overall average of 271ppk and a SQQ of 275 which once again stood proud and prominently at the top of the table for Monday markets. The sale was topped at £162 for heavy texel cross lambs consigned by first time vendor Messrs Robb, Meikledykes, Lockerbie. The Leading Price per kilo was 365.9ppk paid for texel lambs from Brian Strong, Grapes Barn, Wigton. Another new vendor Messrs Robson, South Ryal Farm, Newcastle led the vendor averages selling 91 lambs to average £145.66. Suffolk lambs topped at £156 for heavies from regular consigner John Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham. With mules to £139 from John and Mandy Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Hexham.
A large offering of 929 cast sheep drew entries from as far a field as Northern Ireland and The Isle of Man. Again trade was strong being ahead of other outlets trading locally. Prices peaked at £200 for texels from Messrs Kermode, Orrisdale Farm, Isle of Man. More cast sheep can be sold to advantage within this centre.
