PRIME CATTLE: A small offering of only 34 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a far sharper trade to that of last week for a similar quality of cattle. Top overall was an Aberdeen Angus cross heifer from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie weighing 724kgs and selling to £2291.46 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Brampton. Messrs Teasdale Colstons, Penrith sold a 629kg Limousin cross for £1783.22 purchase by A & D Meats. Messrs Hird, West End Cockermouth sold 555kgs to £1762.13 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill Lockerbie sold a 551 Luing cross for £1617.19 and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. A top overall pence per kilo of 321.50 went to a 536kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers. Steers sold to a days top of £2289.18 for a 721kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold 735kgs for £2238.08 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie sold their best to £2228.13 for 755kgs again purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Best native was a 596kg Blue Grey from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle achieving £1540.66 selling to Alan Jarvis. Top pence per kilo of 317.5 went to a 721 Limousin cross from Messrs Bow, Bothel Parks selling to Pioneer Foods with next best at 304.5p from Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle with a 735kg Limousin cross.

PRIME BULLS: Another good number of 86 prime bulls forward seeing yet again another very plain offering of cattle forward as a lot look rushed away! As said in previous weeks all best fleshed bulls were rewarded. Top overall was an 848kg Limousin bull from Messrs Armstrong, Broomhills, Longtown achieving £2624.56. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries sold 759kgs to £2379.47 purchased by A & D Meats. British Blue crosses to £2154.41 for 782kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton and purchased by Mutch Meats. Maine Anjou cross bred to £1986.79 for 754kgs from Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie purchased by A & D Meats and Parthenais crosses to £1961.39 for 687kgs from Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport purchased by Mutch Meats. Black and Whites peaked at £1525.16 for 728kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston with Montbeliarde’s to £1524.45 for 611kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle again to Bowland Foods this was also top pence per kilo at 249.5p.

PRIME SHEEP:  Lambs came forwards in great numbers once more with 3015 forward and joined by 640 local farmers despite last weeks slip in trade Borderway stopped the rot posting an average of 15p – 20p ahead of Thursdays rates. An all in average of 257ppk, SQQ 263ppk or £117.15 per head was achieved with heavy lambs selling very well with one new vendor £15 per head better off over his trailer load of lambs, sending him home ready to draw for next Monday. West Cumbrian vendors claimed the top prices per head this week with Tom & Julian Airey, New Grange selling heavies to £160 and £159 followed closely by Messrs Sanderson, Swalowdene, Dearham at £158. Another making the trip along the A595 was Robbie Graham of ML Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton who sold the top price per kilo lambs at 371.4p (42kg, £156). Suffolks & Mules were both topped by Messrs Hope, Mouldyhills, Canonbie selling at £140 and £132 respectively.
