Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 560 calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £3000 was a 10mth old Lim cross heifer from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon which was bought by Mellin, Long Preston.

The Pre-Sale Show saw one of the best turnouts of quality calves put in front of our Judges, father and son team Gordon and Harry Amos, Leicester.

The overall Championship was awarded to the first placed Limousin cross steer at 6mth old which was sold for £2300 from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby and was purchased by Messrs Vance, Newton Stewart.

The Reserve overall Championship was awarded to the second placed Limousin cross steer which was 11mth old and sold for £1620 from Messrs Sedgley to the Judges Messrs Amos, Leicester.

Messrs Brown, Asby Hall also sold a 10mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £2550 selling to Messrs Allen, Thornton-le-Dale with the same buyers purchasing another 6mth old Limousin cross heifer for £2500 also from Asby Hall.

Messrs Brown also sold a 7mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £2500 selling to Nisbet, Ayrshire. The Asby Hall stable then sold another 6mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £2100, again being taken home by Messrs Vance, Newton Stewart.

The Brown family concluded  their “hexad” of cattle exceeding £2000 with another 6mth old Limousin cross heifer with this one selling to Messrs Ewing, Dumfriesshire.

Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange, Great Asby sold a 12mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £2150 selling to Messrs Grainger, Wigton.

Mr G Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith sold a British Blue heifer to make £1880 selling to Messrs Williamson, Hamsterley.

Messrs Swinbank, Brow Farm, Dufton sold a 11mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £1840 selling to Messrs Bunting, Dumfries.

Messrs Lawson, Buddle House, Richmond sold a 9mth old Limousin cross steer to make £1765 selling to Messrs Amos, Leicester.

Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses, Asby sold a 7mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £1760 selling to Messrs Crichton, Egremont, with this same home selling a pair of Limousin cross steers to make £1705 purchased by Messrs Amos, Leicester.

Messrs Millar, Crookholm, Canonbie sold a 13mth old Limousin cross heifer to make £1720 bought by Messrs Bunting, Dumfries.

Messrs Peile, Greystoke Castle Farm sold a pair of 6mth old Charollais cross steers to make £1435.

Trade was described as one of the dearest seen for some classes of suckled calves with all types being a flyer.

A Steer sale average of £1228.25 (up £170.51 on the year) and a heifer sale average of £1175.94 (up £131.44 on the year) was achieved. An overall sale average of £1204.45 (up £153.16) was achieved.

41 Calves sold between £1500 - £3000. Plenty of good quality 6-10mth old steers and heifers regularly sold between £1400 - £1600 with show potentials selling between £2000-£3000.

Over 50 active buyers were in attendance from the length and breadth of the country.
